Thinking of installing Xeon Phi on my Mac Pro.

Lowest TDP is 225W.
So, I'll use two AUX connections of 75W and the Card will pull 75W from the PCI socket.

For a video card I'll use the one which does not need extra power supply (i.e. FirePro V4900).
Is this going to work ?

First thing, PCIe cards do not take more than 45W from the PCIe slots since the meltdown debacle from AMD reference RX-480. You will need to power it directly from a Pixla's mod or you'll have SMC emergency shutdowns.

Second, while you probably can install the Xeon Phi to the Mac Pro physically and electrically, do you have any apps that support it? If you don't, it will be completely useless.

Xeon Phi was a major fail not without reason.

Thanks Alex,

To be on the safe side I'd rather go with external 500W power supply with proper 6-pin and 8-pin connectors (pixla's mod is too hardcore for me) - this way I can use Xeon Phi with active cooling which is 300W TDP.

In terms of software I've got mpss-3.8.6 (both windows and linux) as well as so called "intel forced" driver including "Intel(R) Xeon Phi(TM) coprocessor Virtual Ethernet Adapter (x64)" and "Intel Parallel Studio 2013".

For the Video card (which I can only put in Slot#2) I'd like something short, so it does not obstruct the Fan from Xeon Phi 7120A (Lenovo Part# 90Y2420 from a decommissioned x3650 M5 box).

I am thinking GeForce GT 730 (Kepler variant, GK208) - hopefully it will support Metal with Sonoma (dual booted with Windows 10).
