Canada, eh!
When I connect my XGA projector (NEC VT540, native resolution 1024x768) to my 2012 retina MBP I don't have the option of native resolution in the Displays panel in System Preferences. I only get 800x600 and 1280x1024.

When I connect my projector to my 2008 13" Macbook, I get the native resolution of the projector in the Displays panel.

The panel on the left is on my rMBP and the panel on the right is my 2008 Macbook.

I called Apple support and they said that's just the way it is. It doesn't seem like Apple to do this. Does anyone have any idea?

I found the solution!

To fix the external monitor resolution by showing more sensible resolution options, hold the Option key while clicking on the Scaled radio button.

It was like an Easter Egg! Unbelievable Apple would do something like this!
