Hi, I'm looking for a way to open an XLS file on OS X without shelling out for a program. Are there any freeware out there to do this?

Thanks

NeoOffice will do this. It's based on the OpenOffice code, but has a number of extra IBM-provided features and is more integrated into the OSX interface than native OpenOffice.

I really wanted to avoid downloading an entire suite but it does look like my only option. Thanks for the suggestions; I've used OpenOffice before and it's great but the screenshots of NeoOffice looks inviting.

Downing now.

I disagree; the new beta of OpenOffice.org 3 is far superior to NeoOffice and is much better with integration. I'm quite impressed with Oo_O 3.

Besides, it's Oo_O that has support of IBM and Sun. NeoOffice is maintained by a few volunteers.

EDIT: Also, if you have Leopard you can just use Quicklook to view the file, but you won't be able to edit it.
