I recently upgraded my Beige G3 processor with a Sonnet G4 card. I did not get the increase in speed I expected. I was told it was due to the fact my 4GB HD was too full, and that I would be happier if I installed a new ATA drive with a controller card. I was running 10.3.5 with XPostFacto at that time. My 2 main speed issues were with video, whether online or downloaded, and with accessing stuff on my SCSI drive, which is very slow and sounds like a tornado in there.

I bought a used Ultra IDE Adapter - Acard AEC-6280M on ebay, and a Maxtor ATA 133 HD. When I installed the card I discovered the cable to connect it to the new HD was too short. So I left the card in and rebooted, only to get a grey screen with a folder and a flashing ? mark. With the help of a knowledgable Mac guy, I tried several key combos on reboot, but nothing worked. He felt it had to be that XPF had been corrupted.

When my longer cable arrived I hooked up the new HD, formatted it, partitioned it with an 8GB partition, and installed 10.2. It booted fine. After backing up my 4GB HD on my SCSI, I got on the internet and downloaded XPF again. At the beginning of the install it gives you the choice of which OS to boot in after the install. I cannot choose 9 because I never owned it. I went straight from 8 that came with my G3 to 10.2. So I chose 10, it completed the install, and restarted. Again the grey screen with the flashing question mark.

So, XPF is incompatible with my new controller card? Is it the brand? If I had OS 9 would I be able to work out the problem? I was ready to just go back to using 10.2, but I'm already having some of the problems with it that went away when I was using 10.3.

I know XPF has tech support, but I'd hate to pay the $25 for it only to find out there's nothing I can do short of taking out my card and new HD.

Any and all help and advice is greatly appreciated!!!
