Running an iMac, late 2015 27" with Fusion drive.

I have an installation of Windows 11 on an external SSD drive. All is good.

Until I leave the Mac for a period. Then XProtectRemediator cuts in, as it is supposed to.
However, when it gets to scanning the Windows drive, all (insert favourite word here...) breaks loose.
RAM usage by XProtectRemediator goes through the roof, and sometimes the whole Mac just freezes.
If I eject the Windows drive, then everything settles down. Mostly. Sometimes I have to quit XProtectRemediator via the Activity monitor.

This happens with both macOS 12.6.3 Monterey and 13 Ventura.

It used not to happen with Monterey, but I can't remember what version it started with, maybe 12.4 or 12.5.
I have re-formatted the SSD drive and re-installed Windows. No difference.

Is anybody else having the same problem?

If the Windows drive is mounted as read-only, maybe XprotectRemediator keeps trying to write some “verified” info on the disk, metadata on the checked files.
You could try to mount it in read-write mode with Mounty for NTFS https://mounty.app or something similar.

I have finally solved this problem. If I put the Windows drive into Spotlight Privacy, it doesn't search the drive, and for some reason, XProtectRemediator doesn't cut in.
