The question of xs (even x) or Xs Max has been asked a lot, I find myself in the same position and instead want to focus on the productivity of the larger device.

Clearly most people would agree the size of the standard Xs is easier to pocket, carry and use one handed.

If you take away the media viewing, games & films you are really left with does the large screen make you more productive?

The battery life difference probably doesn’t quite come into play as it’s not quite significant enough.

I am defining productivity as emails, document editing/viewing using apps to complete “tasks” general usage for work/personal admin. Including managing social media.

So do you think or find you are or would be more productive on an Xs Max than a regular Xs?

I find it easier to work with the larger screen of the Max. Other than that, it's just a beautiful, fast, hard working phone. I don't know if I am more productive with it, but it sure gets the job done and it's a big beautiful screen. Without a doubt the best phone I have owned.

It is a subjective question. Some people need / prefer a larger screen to get tasks done, while others can do the same with a smaller screen.

You have 14 days to try a phone. Hands-on is your best tool in deciding. Make the most of it.

I prefer the XS Max larger keyboard compared to my previous X. I don’t know if I type faster but I feel more comfortable.

Productive for what?

It's still a phone? For all that you mentioned, I would never ditch laptop or desktop and start doing things on phone.

If you still think doing those things on a phone is way to go, then yes, bigger screen estate will make things more easier. Especially keyboard, it is easier to type.

What it comes down to is this, can you justify the price point for the larger display in viewing content? Do you think that it would benefit you to be able to view your documents, media, photos, etc. on a larger display? That’s what the Max offers, is a larger display, and a larger battery, for some that translates perfectly, for others, maybe not.

My wife and I came from the 8+. We enjoy the bigger screen, how easier it is to read text for long periods of time, and face-id. For productivity, we both use computers with keyboards/mice. I have never really been productive on my phone. There was a period of time in 2018 when I use my iPhone for journaling, note taking, and basically as much as I could (with an external bluetooth keyboard). I much prefer a laptop for productivity.

Definitely think you'd have a hard time justifying the Xs MAX as being more productive over another phone just because of a little bit of extra screen space. An iPad still wins out (I have one) over media consumption and tasks that require a bit more interaction.

Thanks for the replies, I have a laptop and an iPad but the laptop is relegated to pure document creating and the iPad largely to watching Netflix/series!

For email, slack, browsing, messages and social the phone is king, as I think it is for a lot of people?

The question is for this purpose, is the bigger phone more productive for you?

For me, yes, because I like having a larger display to show me more content, it’s that simple. When I owned a smaller smart phone, like the iPhone SE which is a 4 inch display, and the 4.7 inch iPhone models, those are great because they’re more compact in the pocket, but for viewing content or enlarging photos, etc. I would rather much have a larger display like the iPhone Plus model or Max. The caveat being with the larger phone, is that obviously it may not be the comfortable as to hold one-handed, and of course it’s going to consume more space in your pocket, if you can accept those two considerations, then I think a larger display is more beneficial in every way, and of course a larger phone includes a larger battery.

For the brief time I had the Max I think I probably toyed faster when I could use two hands but when I anything on my other hand it was almost impossible to type whereas on my XS it’s perfectly fine.

I spend a lot of time reading, researching and browsing on my phone in addition to playing games. With almost 25pct more surface area vs the X, it’s not a real mystery why I greatly prefer the Max from a production standpoint.

Apple doesn’t do enough to make its larger screen devices worthwhile. No split-screen apps or PiP mode. Hell, Twitter offers PiP in app. The iPad Mini 4 has more multitasking capabilities. A 6.5” display should be able to handle that stuff.
