Thinking of getting one from a 7 plus. Have the option to either change the battery on the 7+ or upgrade. Thoughts ?

is the poor cell reception on the xs max a deal breaker?

In my experience, I don't think the XS (or 11 Pro) is any different (worse or better) than the X or the 7. None of the phones with Intel modems have performed well for me in weak signals. I'm looking forward to getting a Qualcomm modem in 2020.

I'm one of the ones with reception issues. For the most part, it only applies to a few of us. Most everyone is fine. It's only an issue if you live in an area -- a pocket -- with incredibly low-signal strength. Outside of those pockets, the phone is blazingly fast from a reception perspective. You'll most likely be fine!

I have nothing other than anecdotal evidence. But I have friends w XS-series phones, and I've seen moments on the same network where their phones don't work but others do. If you ever travel outside the city, I'd avoid the XS models based on what I've seen and read on these forums. For me personally, I'd take a refurb X, refurb 8+, or new XR instead.

It depends on the cell coverage in your area. I’d say get the Max and don’t worry about it considering most don’t have any problems with reception..

I see! Could it be the issue with the different cellular modems causing the issue? Intel vs Qualcomm? I would like an XR though but it’s using a LCD.

It does have poor reception. Especially when signal is not the best. Other phones manage to keep stable connection, while people can't hear me on XS Max. I can hear them crystal clear, but they can't hear me.

All XS, XS Max and XR use Intel modems, Qualcomm hasn’t been available since the X, 8 and 8+... Next years iPhones will begin using Qualcomm again..

My XS had poor reception in fringe areas, which was one of the two reasons I now have an 11 Pro. Even though both have the Intel models, the 11 Pro has significantly better reception in the same fringe areas, to the point that it remains useful whereas the XS didn’t.

If you want Xr, why not just get it? LCD is fine with your 7+. Xr will give you a modern all-screen design, and bigger screen than you have now, in a body size that is smaller. What’s not to like.

Plus the XR has better antennae gain than the XS and 11 Pro.

I have an 11 Pro, my partner has an XR. Her XR is a damn great phone. Yes, the 11 Pro screen is really nice, but I don't mind the XR's screen at all. Battery life is phenomenal too.
