Apple refurbs are as good as new and qualify for all the same AppleCare coverage.
You might be able to snag a better deal online.

There is a possibility that Apple could discontinue the current lineup to boost sale on the new lineup after debut. Similar to how the X was discontinued after XS.

Even though it was discontinued it was offered for $100 off until stock was depleted (X).
OP: If history is any indication iPhone XS Max will be $999 after next weeks presentation. You might have to go to an Apple store and specifically ask for stock if they discontinue it and stop selling online (besides refurbished which is also a good option).
Remember I'm getting a 25% discount. So I'll go with new or try a refurb if they're available. Thanks all.
Imo the XS Max will be discontinued.
At $999, it has a weird place in the lineup, especially when there’s already a $999 iPhone 11.
If you still want the XS Max, your best bet is to wait for it to reappear in the refurbished store, or from carrier/3rd party resellers.
UPDATE: I ended up purchasing a mint condition XS MAX from Swappa for $670 with Apple Warranty until March 2020. So after selling my 8+ for $430, I just paid an additional $240.
The Apple Store site no longer shows the XS/XS Max at all. 8, XR, 11, and 11 Pro.
