It appears confirmed from Apple's site that there are only 1 model of each size with both containing both CDMA and LTE. https://www.apple.com/iphone-xs/specs/

So changing carriers later etc wont be so painful requiring buying a new phone; only Verizon phones supported CDMA and GSM in prior years.

Model A1920*
  • FDD‑LTE (Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 29, 30, 32, 66, 71)
  • TD‑LTE (Bands 34, 38, 39, 40, 41, 46)
  • CDMA EV-DO Rev. A (800, 1900 MHz)
  • UMTS/HSPA+/DC-HSDPA (850, 900, 1700/2100, 1900, 2100 MHz)
  • GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
Model A1921*
  • FDD‑LTE (Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 29, 30, 32, 66, 71)

The XR is the big question mark. The XS is using the Intel XMM 7560 modem which is their first chip that supports Gigabit, MIMO, and CDMA thus allowing for only 1 SKU.

According to Apple the XR doesn't have Gigabit or MIMO. So therefore its not using the XMM 7560? So will we see a Qualcomm CDMA SKU? Place your bets.

There were rumors on some articles and videos that it is the same chip but they are limiting it via software? Probably not true, though.

XR is using the same Intel XMM 7560 modem. It just doesn't have 4x4 MIMO antennas. It uses 2x2 just like iPhone X.

You can see the additional 2 antennas on the Xs on the top and bottom of the device. The XR doesn't have these antennas.

There's still a question mark of why Apple is listing the model separately.

In regions where they sell known CDMA+GSM iPhones, there is only one model.

The U.S. model could still be software limited to GSM or CDMA in some fashion.

Model A1984*
  • FDD‑LTE (Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 29, 30, 32, 66, 71)

  • GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
Appears to be the same exact bands as the XS/Max so presumably same modem.
