Hey all,

I figure this might be the best place to come for help with this.

I'm trying to replace an old XServe with a new Mac Pro and want to just clone the drive over for the time being as I did not set this server up and just want to migrate the data.

The XServe is on 10.6.8. I've tried permissions repairs, Firewire 800 and USB 2. The drives can be seen in System Profiler, but Disk Utility will not recognize that they are connected so I am unable to mount them.

Any ideas? Should I do a SMC/PRAM reset to see if that fixes it?

FW800 cable from Xserve to Mac Pro.

Boot the Xserve into Target Disk Mode (T at boot), use something like CCC to make a full image of the Xserve onto the Mac Pro.

Boot the Xserve properly, and boot the Mac Pro into Target Disk Mode.

Pull the image of the Xserve from the Mac Pro, use Disk utility to wipe the mounted Mac Pro HDD, then restore the CCC image of the Xserve to the Mac Pro.

Boot the Mac Pro normally and fix permissions. Should be ok, though check System Preferences > Network, as the settings there will probably be wrong, best to remove them then add back in only the networking interfaces you need.

If you can't see a FW drive when an attached machine is running in Target Disk Mode, check if the FW cable / ports are faulty.
