Hi,

My name is Keith. I'm a newbie when it comes to midi devices. I'm having a problem trying to connect a Yahama PSR -E303 keyboard to my MAC. I'm running OS 10.3 and I'm using a Midisport UNO USB/MIDI cable and their latest driver.

When I tried recording in GarageBand the first piano key I struck was recorded and then the next several key strocks did nothing. eventually after hammering piano keys several times, another note would be recorded.

I used a midi monitoring program to 'see' what my computer was receiving and discovered that the first key press sent a "Note ON" code, but the next several key presses sent an unditermined "Invalid Code". Eventually, after many key presses another "Note ON" code or "Note OFF" could would be sent.

Is this problem ringing any bells with the gurus on the forum? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, if you are getting any MIDI data in to the computer (which you are), it is probably a problem between the keyboard and the interface (keyboard setting, bad MIDI cable, etc.) I would see if i could find the MIDI settings on the keyboard and make sure everything seems ok (see if it is set for GM (general MIDI)), and if possible i might do a software reset on the keyboard (if this is even possible with that keyboard).

When testing it out, try the same key, this may determine if one or more keys are the faulty parties. Other than that, see if you could try the keyboard out on another computer, be it windows or mac os based, just to see if it is a software issue. Oh...another thing to check..is the Midisport uno plugged into a usb hub? If so sometimes this will cause an issue. The "invalid code" suggests to me that it is sending either a corrupt MIDI message or a message that your programs can not decipher.

Good luck!

Thanks for your suggestions. I've done some more experimenting and it looks like it is a problem with the keyboard. If I press a key down I get a Note On message. If I hold it down for about four seconds and then let it up, I get a Note Off message. In short, as long as I only do one thing each four seconds, it all works fine. Any key presses within that four second window result in Invalid Code Errors. Naturally, I waited until the keyboard was out ofwarranty before I tried hooking it to my computer. :(

Yamaha and Midisport Uno

If it's any consolation, I think the problem is not with your keyboard but with the midisport. I encountered similar problem -- with the midisport, my Yamaha DD-55 digital percussion system supplies the correct MIDI codes on an intial drum hit, but then nothing works for four seconds. Yamaha customer service claims that the problem will be solved with a UX-16, and I think the incompatibility applies to many though not all Yamaha items, when using the Midisport. See reviews of the midisport on amazon and http://72.14.209.104/search?q=cache...midisport+uno+yamaha&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=7

I have not yet tried a UX16 but think it might solve both your problem and mine.

same problem here (I guess)

I seem to have the same problem:
My yamaha cs1x gives a lot of invalid midi messages with the midisport Uno.
But only when I use Reason or Ableton, when I use Garageband or Logic express, it works quite fine.
Also, my dx100 (Yamaha, 1986), gives no problems.
So where is the problem situated?

Kind regards,
Mark

Solution!

Here is a letter I received from M-Audio Tech Support, hope it helps:

Hi,

If I understand correctly, you are having problem using your Yamaha Keyboard with the MIDIUno... Is that right? I assume it is one of those incompatibility problem that the MIDISport Uno has with a few of the Yamaha keyboards. I would recommend exchanging the unit for a MIDIsport 1x1 that is essentially the same device but a different made. The MIDISport 1x1 has no incompatibility issue with YAMAHA keyboards.

Regards.
