Hey everyone! I know this has been asked before, but I still don’t get it at all. Can someone explain it to me like I’m five? 😅

Here’s my situation:

  • I have three lines:
    • 2 iPhones
    • 1 Android
  • One of my iPhones is being paid off through EIP (Installment 15 of 24).
  • The other iPhone is paid off
  • The Android is also on EIP
Now, I want to pre-order the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Do I need to do that through T-Mobile, or can I pre-order it directly from Apple?

Let’s say I want to upgrade the iPhone that still has EIP payments left
Can I do that through Apple (by linking my T-Mobile account), and will T-Mobile pay off the rest of what I owe thanks to the Go5G Next yearly upgrade?

Or — does the yearly upgrade only work if I upgrade through T-Mobile?

Sorry if this sounds all over the place — I really want to understand how this works.
I know that buying from Apple gives me an unlocked phone, but that’s not my main concern.

What I want to do is upgrade my iPhones every year (like one this year, the other one next year) — but I’m confused if that can be done through Apple, or if it has to be done directly through T-Mobile.

Thanks so much for the help!

I have t mobile but I usually go through Apple to guarantee I get it on launch day

If you purchase through Apple with T-Mobile financing, you get a factory unlocked phone.

If you go through T-Mobile, you'll get a phone that's locked to T-Mobile.

I believe you may be able to upgrade yearly through Apple if you have Go5G Next. As long as Apples T-Mobile portal can apply that promo at checkout but I’d check with them. If they say it does then have record of that in case it doesn’t because T-Mobile can apply it retro actively if you speak to the right person. I’ve done that before. However, I’m grandfathered in with the original yearly upgrade offered to iPhone 13 buyers. With the grandfathered yearly upgrade and an older plan such as MagentaMax you have to go through T-Mobile because those plans don’t show up in Apples carrier portal. That’s their policy as of last years iPhone launch. When doing the yearly upgrade you have to trade your current device with either Apple or T-Mobile and the remaining EIP is paid off by T-Mobile. It’s a nice perk if you want the newest iPhone every year. Only downside ordering from T-Mobile instead of Apple is T-Mobile SIM locks your phone till it’s paid off. And you can’t pay off early anymore and still get remaining bill credits. So buying from Apple is the way to go if you want your iPhone unlocked from day one. Hope this helps you out.
