Hello,
I'm new here, and just wanted to share my story about my recent apple purchases
So on black friday I decided to order the macbook air from Best Buy, because of the discount and 18 month no interest financing option. I always steal my gf's 2010 mac pro when i can, and thought it was time to get my own.
After receiving the computer, I quickly noticed the screen seemed a bit off to me. The contrast seemed dull and colors a bit yellow, and i could not calibrate it out. Upon searching the internet I found this forum where i learned that the mac air has two different screens, the lg and samsung. I checked, and sure enough mine was the "worse" lg screen. I tried for 10 days to just get used to it, but it really was bothering me. Seeing as how this would be my computer for the next 5 years I decided to go to the apple store (nyc) and compare.
I could easily tell which airs on display were lg and samsung just by looking at them, I checked the terminals to confirm. Many people say you really cant tell a difference, but I certainly could easily. The guys at the store suggested returning the computer to best buy then keep exchanging at the apple store until i got one with the screen i wanted.
I decided to just upgrade to the 13 inch pro retina, since i found a great deal on b and h that best buy would price match and I could get the financing.
The 13 inch retina screen was awesome, at first, but I noticed the whites were kind of yellow and red. I compared to my gf's 2010 mac, and sure enough her color balance blew away my retina, which is just totally not acceptable. I tried calibrating it like crazy, and got it to the point where it was almost acceptable, but decided to compare against all floor models at the apple store (nyc). I compared with about 15 models, 13 and 13 inch, and all the display models were perfect, and really showed how far off my display was.
The geniuses at first were denying seeing a difference, until i told them i actually bought it at best buy, to which they said, "oh well guess i see it, if you bought it here we would replace it for you." Also i forgot to mention my trackpad was a bit off in its clicking response, not a big deal, but just another small detail that was off.
I went to best buy to exchange, geek squad noticed the display was off right away, gave me a new one. Opened it there, this new one's screen WAS EVEN MORE YELLOW, but the trackpad was perfect at least. the geeksquad agent and I compared to all the floor models, and sure enough, they all made mine look terrible. So geek squad grabbed A THIRD NEW ONE, we opened it up, and not as bad as the second, but still no good. At the end we had my 3 exchanges, and a floor model all lined up next to each other. The floor model was white, my original purchase looked a bit punk/yellow, the 2nd exchange hideously yellow, and the third noticeably off.
Geek squad didn't know what to think, but agreed it was crazy and unacceptable. he offered that I could take any of the 3 i wanted or just return the computer. So i returned. (also best buy then just repackaged all 3 computers as open boxed items
with no defects.
I'm trying really hard to give apple my money, all I ask is for a reasonable display, like the floor models. Only option at this point would be to wait until i have enough cash to buy directly from apple and go through the exchange circus again. Can't believe Apple has made it this hard to make a purchase.
I know I am being picky, but 3 geek squad agents at bestbuy all agreed and said they personally wouldn't keep it either. I just find the situation crazy and wanted to share the experience. Hope u guys have better luck.
oh yea, and all the trackpads on all the exchanges were different in terms of click response and pressure needed too
