I'mposting this because all of you keep taking a jab at the G5 for not reaching 3ghz, well yes it did sometime after steves macworld keynote, but apple hasn't put them in the powermacs, thatmake steve look like a fool as he gave that as one of the reasons for switching to intel in his keynote:rolleyes:

In late 2005, the 970MP replaced the 970FX in Apple's high end Power Mac G5 computers, while the iMac G5 and the 'legacy' Power Mac G5 continued to use the 970FX processor. In early 2006, IBM announced the PowerPC 970GX, a slightly redesigned 970FX core that reached 3 GHz.

So It Did Reach 3Ghz

I still don't know why they made the change over to intel. The motorola processors were awesome!

Because they can't sell G4 powerbooks forever. There is no moble solution, and intel is a name switchers recognise, and apple recognises switchers. ;)

 So when was it Jobs said they'd have G5's at 3Ghz, 2003/4? By mid-2005 the G5 still hadn't achieved it so he announced the switch to intel which was obviously giving better assurance to Apple that they could reach performance targets. After a large portion of Apple products had switched to intel the G5 reaches 3Ghz, but is it available yet and how does it compare to intel competitors?

Exactly how does this make Steve Jobs look the fool?

If Apple had stuck with PPC there'd be Wintel notebooks at half the price of PowerBooks but 5x the performance right now with no real gains to look forward to.

so did the 970MP.

anywho apple just saw how much conroe/woodcrest/merom are going to own everything out their and jumped ship as they should of done.

If everything really does end up as 'Universal' Binary surely there's no need for Apple to switch completely to either processor manufacturer and could take the best from both worlds. I'm guessing Intel's roadmap has the future pretty figured out for Apple, though, even if the G5 does crawl along to new performance highs.

It's almost sad it'll probably never end up in an Apple Mac :D

It was a beautiful spring morning. Watching the sunrise over Chesapeake Bay, Gary finally realizes the state of denial that has been gnawing at him for months. Finally he admits:

It's a dead platform, who cares?

Months of "you'll have to pry the G5 from my cold, dead hands" and multitudes of problems with the last production models of the Powermac G5, Gary began his quest to accept Intel in his life...

I just watched this thing on reparative gay therapy on CNN this morning...could it have something to do...

They'd prolly have to hook up a refigerant truck to a 3.0 GHz G5.

*still unexcited about Intel*

correct me if i'm wrong but doesn't the xbox 360 have 3 3hz G5s in it? and that was out in november 2005.

This is a bit of a let down. With universal binarys really being pushed why don't they just stick out the 3 ghz g5.
the only real benifit to the intel switch was having the core duo processors in the portables and what did it get us? Intel graphics!

The Xbox 360 has a custom designed IBM PowerPC-based processor with three symentrical cores each running at 3.2GHz. The G5 name is an Apple product attached to IBM's CPUs. The processor in th Xbox is a unitasker. It couldn't hold a candle to the G5 is real world performance.

2/3 of the portables do not have Intel graphics.
The core duo in iMacs and minis were also a "real benefit".
However, the real "real benefit" will come with Merom, Conroe and Woodcrest.

Not that I don't believe you Macmadant, but is there a link to your quotation? :)

No probs:rolleyes:
i'm not defending the G5 i just wanted to stop all the sarky comments about the G5 not reaching it, also i was tired of telling poeple:D

Ummm apple's main target is laptop users and the G5 wasnt going into a laptop anytime soon so Steve wouldnt have looked like a fool. How many desktops do you honetly think they sell in comparison to laptops...

the intel switch was b/c of the G4 in laptops, not the G5 in desktops. The G5 is great, and IBM is likely to continue turning out new high quality desktop/server chips.
