I now only have 6 x 1GB of ram left in my 2008 mac pro. I know this is not a optimal configuration.

Should I Buy 2 more 1GB sticks. To bring my mac pro back up to 8GB?
Or should I buy 4 x 2GB, and scrap 2 of the 1GB for a total of 12Gb?

I know for best performance, you want to have matching sets of 4. Does this mean you have to have all 8 matching? Or will 4 x 2GB and 4 x 1GB work just as good as all 8 matching?

last but not least,
If I do toss 2 of the 1GB sticks, and get 4 x 2GB. How would I install them.

rpaloalto,

It seems a waste to buy more 1GB DIMMs. This will work best and give you maximum performance:

Riser A
Slot 1: 2GB
Slot 2: 2GB
Slot 3: 1GB
Slot 4: 1GB

Riser B
Slot 1: 2GB
Slot 2: 2GB
Slot 3: 1GB
Slot 4: 1GB

If you go that route, how much do you want for your 2 extra 1GB DIMMs? I work in the Santa Clara area so I believe I am local.
