Hi. I am having some strange issues with Yosemite and Airport Extreme. I would appreciate any advice on how to troubleshoot the problem. Here's my situation (it's a bit long):

I have an IMac from 2007, an IPod Touch 4G and an Airport Extreme Base Station. I connect my IMac and the IPod Touch 4G to the Internet via the Airport Extreme's wifi. I forget the model of the Airport Extreme, but it's compatible with Mavericks and Yosemite.

For a year, I have had Mavericks running on my IMac's internal drive and I also had installed Mavericks on an external drive that I rarely use.

I wanted to test Yosemite, so I decided to install it on the external drive first. So I installed Yosemite on the external drive yesterday. The installation worked fine and I had no problems under Yosemite using applications that require the Internet.

So, this morning, I installed Yosemite on my internal drive. But, after installing Yosemite, I'm getting an error on that drive saying there is no Internet connection for most apps that use the Internet. Such apps include all Apple's apps: Safari, ITunes, App Store, Mail, ICloud. Dropbox isn't connecting either.

However, I am able to access the Internet using a few non-Apple apps, such as Google Chrome and Skype. Although, I tried some other browsers -- Opera, Firefox and Omniweb -- and those browsers said I wasn't connected to the Internet as well.

I've never had a situation like this where some apps can access the Internet and some can't.

I ran Airport Utility to see if that provided any clues. It was unable to find my Airport Extreme. It also showed an orange indicator where it says "Internet" indicating there is no Internet connection.

However, the light on my Airport Extreme is green showing that it's successfully connected to the Internet. So I don't know why Airport Utility isn't recognizing my Internet connection.

Also, I opened the Network preferences from System Preferences and it says I'm connected to Wifi and displays my I.P. address.

I decided to look again at Yosemite on my external drive. So, I selected my external drive as my startup disk and rebooted. I then opened Airport Utility. My Airport Extreme successfully appeared in Airport Utility and the indicators next to the "Internet" heading and my Airport Extreme were both green. I then tested numerous apps, including the Apple apps, and I was able to successfully access the Internet with all of them.

So, I don't know why Airport Utility isn't recognizing my Airport Extreme when I boot from my internal drive, yet it's recognizing my Airport Extreme when I boot from the external drive.

My IPod Touch is also able to connect to the Internet via Wifi from the Airport Extreme regardless of which disk I've booted from.

I called Apple today and I talked to a customer support guy who tried to help me, with no luck. I'm going to talk to him again on Monday. And he said Apple would give me 90 days of support, which is very nice since Yosemite is free and my IMac is almost 7 years old.

However, I'm posting here because I'm not 100% confident that Apple will figure out how to solve the problem. And I'd rather solve the problem as soon as possible because it's affecting my workflow.

So I'm wondering if anyone knows what could be going on.

I have reset my cable modem and reset the Airport Extreme and they didn't make a difference. When I was using the external drive as my startup disk I was also able to update the firmware of the Airport Extreme but that hasn't made a difference when booting from my internal drive.

Anyway, thanks for reading this. Let me know if you have any ideas for me to figure out how to make my Airport Extreme show up when I'm booting from my internal drive.

M.
