Hey. It seems like the computer must be turned on in order for it to tranfer files to a nas or icloud. Am I just imagining things, or did prior mac os x's wait to go to sleep till after active connections were finished with transferring?

Hey. It seems like the computer must be turned on in order for it to tranfer files

Prior versions of OS X (or any computer for that matter) were unable to transfer data while they were off or sleeping. They may have deferred said action while the activity was ongoing and then went into sleep mode. Any computer that goes into sleep/hibernation/shut off is for intents and purposes.

OS X does have the power nap, which causes it to wake up periodically to check for new mail, calendar and iCloud stuff but I don't think it can or was used for data transfers.
