Yosemite External Harddrive Permissions

I'm having issues with having to put my password in every time I change or delete anything on my external. I am the owner, the check box for ignore permissions seems to be non existent now and when I make myself owner and give permission and then click apply changes it freezes every time and I have to restart finder. Please help! This is driving me insane!!

Try repairing your disk with disk utility.
Open Disk Utility and Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions.
