First, this is not a duplicate of the errors from years ago regarding the brightness controls not functioning in target display mode. The keyboard brightness controls (F1 & F2) work just fine in both modes. This is a different beast.

After upgrading to Yosemite (from Mavericks): when I switch to target display mode (the "target" is a Windows 7 box), the brightness is always 100%, regardless of its setting on the Mac. I can lower the brightness while in target mode, and those changes will be "remembered" by the Mac mode, but those changes aren't remembered when making the round trip back to target display mode (it always resets to 100%).

To illustrate with an example:
  • I have my Mac's brightness set to 50%.
  • I then switch to target display mode and the brightness is at 100% (I know this because my eyeballs melt).
  • While in target mode I can use the F1 key to lower the brightness to 50%.
  • Then I switch back to the Mac and the brightness it at its lowest/dimmest setting (so the changes I made while in target mode were remembered by the Mac display, though not in an intuitive way).
  • I immediately switch back to the target display (without touching the brightness setting), and it is once again at 100%.
  • I switch back to the Mac and its still at the lowest setting.
So it's pretty clear that the Mac is remembering the brightness setting, but when switching to target display mode it sets it to 100%, even though the underlying brightness setting is still remembered by the Mac display.

When I was running Mavericks this wasn't an issue. The display would use the same brightness setting in both Mac and target display mode.

This isn't a "blocking" bug because I can change the brightness in either mode. But it's annoying, especially at night (when switching to target display mode is reminiscent of that scene in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation when he turns on the Xmas lights).

Does anybody know if I've missed a setting? Or has there been a resolution (or at least discussion of this) described elsewhere? I google'd it a bit, but unfortunately the results are muddied by an unrelated bug regarding the brightness controls not working at all.
