So this happens to me every day under Yosemite.
On my MBA Mail is always open as a fullscreen app.
Very often I will get an "unable to connect" error (see screenshots attached)
It turns out that Mail always forgets the SSL IMAP port parameters of my account (it's a third party account, not an icloud or gmail). So when I go to account preferences, I see the "USE SSL" unticked and port back to the standard non ssl port.
I put back the parameters and everything goes back to normal, Yosemite gets my emails... Until the next time where I will see the error again and have to enter the parameters again.
I know it is not an account problem because I use Mail on my iMac under Mavericks exactly the same way (always open, same SSL, port parameters...) and never saw this error.
I filed a bug report with feedback assistant. I have the latest public beta of Yosemite
Anyone else?
