I tried updating to Yosemite on a seemingly healthy '09 iMac. The install has been stuck on the circle with 2 minutes left overnight. I read some post saying that it will go eventually, but over night seems like it's doomed.

What is the best way to proceed from here?

If this happens, move your cursor to the top of the screen until the menu bar appears.

In one of the menus, it will show INSTALLER LOG...Choose this.

On the left hand side of the screen that pops up select ALL ERRORS and PROGRESS.

Check out what the last entry is....I once had an Apple installer hang on an update, but for some reason opening the installer log set it free. Not sure why.
