ChatGPT's search engine feature can now be accessed by anyone, OpenAI announced on Wednesday. Previously, users needed an account to use ChatGPT search, but the sign-in requirement has now been removed.

ChatGPT Search is available on the ChatGPT website and in the desktop and mobile apps. Searches can be initiated based on what you ask or by clicking on the web search icon in the ChatGPT interface.

With ChatGPT Search, you can ask a question using conversational language and get web information, along with more details through follow-up questions. ChatGPT maintains context, so the entire conversation can be used to get a tailored answer to a query.

OpenAI has partnered with news and data providers to offer up-to-date information for categories like weather, stocks, sports, news, and maps. Searches with ChatGPT include links to sources, while a sources button below the response provides a sidebar with all of the references used.

A recent ChatGPT search update gives it a more traditional search engine feel, displaying a map, images of local attractions, and brief descriptions for each result. If you're fed up with Google's algorithms, it could be worth a try.

If you have been using ChatGPT daily for the last few months like me you should ask "what do you know about me" and be surprised. And maybe you may ask ChatGPT to delete some of that knowledge.
I use it daily but mine was pretty limited actually. It only knew my occupation and I preferred quick and easy healthy dinner options 😆

OpenAI really scrambling with these new features all in the same week to steal eyeballs away from the true 'open' AI.

How about nixing that $200/month plan while you're at it. Cause the claim about advanced models and enhanced reasoning is a joke. Already many open source models that are more advanced.

You can use DuckDuckGo which won’t need to burn through GPUs and planets.
It's a common misconception that using ChatGPT (and other LLMs) uses lots of energy/GPUs... it doesn't. It uses a lot of energy to do the training but not when used by end-users. Interesting post about it here.

DeepSeek is perhaps a bit too open…

Don’t even think that you’re going to remain anonymous and have privacy even in that mode, they’re still building a customer profile on you.

ChatGPT is not a search engine. If you try to "search" for something it will more than likely hallucinate an answer and be very confident about what it's telling you.

Darn, I knew I shouldn't have been using my credit card number as my online password, but in the heat of the moment, the excitement just got to me.

This is misinformation and is incorrect. It now HAS a SEARCH function (which is a search engine).

Using ChatGPT search it gave me this:

what was the s&p return for 2024

ChatGPT said:

In 2024, the S&P 500 Index achieved a total return of approximately 23.3%, marking the second consecutive year of returns exceeding 20%.

That's wrong. The S&P total return for 2024 was 25%. The number it gave me was just the price change. Using these LLM's for "search" will frequently give you wrong answers. You have to fact check everything they say which is a waste of time.

so , why should I pay for ChatGPT then?

who pays $200 for AI? I got access to like 10 LLMs including gpt4, deepseekr1, sonnet for like $10.

More wrong from ChatGPT search:

what is the world's largest house?

ChatGPT said:

The largest house in the world is the Istana Nurul Iman Palace in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. Serving as the official residence of the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, this palace spans approximately 2.15 million square feet (200,000 square meters).
magicbricks.com

The palace features over 1,700 rooms, including 257 bathrooms, and is equipped with amenities such as a 110-car garage, air-conditioned stables, and a mosque with a capacity for 1,500 worshippers.

In addition to the Istana Nurul Iman Palace, other notable large residences include:
  • Lakshmi Vilas Palace in Vadodara, India: Spanning 30.5 million square feet, this historic mansion was built by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III in the late 19th century.

  • Antilia in Mumbai, India: Owned by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, this 27-story skyscraper residence is approximately 400,000 square feet and features amenities such as a health center, swimming pools, and a multi-story garage.
    jugyah.com
Wikipedia says Antilia is 65,340 sq ft. Where did it get that 400,000 sq ft number from? I even clicked through the article it links as the source and that number isn't in there.

Garbage in, garbage out.

You have to fact check everything they say which is a waste of time.
So you mean to say that exactly the same as with Google search results?

Whatever your particular example was, it's still a search engine, there's no way around it.
