I did it today with my virgin mobile (UK) Mini sim. Had to cut off some of the excess pins that are unused in the phone and even cut the active pins down to size.

Works flawlessly. My brother has done the same thing too.

I did as a precaution sand down the leading and trailing edges of the sim so it wouldn't get stuck inside the phone.
 
just make sure to soften up the sharp edges of the pins once you have cut them, I would also recommend using a craft knife rather than scissors as it is less likely to bend the chip.

This x-ray of a sim shows how the pins are much larger than the chip its self. It should give you some idea of how much you could actually get away with cutting away.
