I have just reinstalled Mail from disk, but am presented with the following message on launch : 'You can’t use this version of Mail with this version of Mac OS X '

I have recently upgraded to 10.6.6. Software update does not offer a mail upgrade.

Any suggestions, tks ?

run the combo update from 6.0 to 6.6

I said in my original post that I am already running 10.6.6, so are you suggesting the problem would be solved by reinstalling the update with Mail now in place ?

Yes, I had this exact situation on another mac that I was fixing and re-installing mail and re-running the latest combo update fixed it. Tthats the only way that you can get the latest Mail.app updates - the version that gets installed from the DVD is out of date.

Mail.app is considered a system default application that gets updated with the system.

I let my current Mail app run overnight and it didn't resolve its issues, so after work today I am going to reinstall it from my SL disk.
I am assuming I don't have to delete my current Mail app.
With the computer on, I will insert the SL disk and choose Options. I expect a list of apps will appear and I will choose Mail. It will then let me replace my current Mail app. After it's installed, I will download the 10.6.6 combo update:

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1349

Then a restart and all will be well.

Does this sound about right?
Thanks!

Having tried the recommendations, have the following error message as per attachment.

Mail is correctly located in Applications..

I installed mail from DVD and applied the same combo patch to no effect ( see me previous post) but you shld definitely try as if it works for you, not me, then i have to point the finger some where else!

Look fwd to hearing.

Probem solved, step by step solution provided:

After I deleted ALL traces of older mail, I got it working...

1. Remove Mail.app from applications.
2. User/Library/Mail - Delete
3. User/Library/Application support/Mail -Delete
4. User/Library/Preferences/mail.plist - Delete
5. (Repeat steps 2-4 in the home directory (click devices then select your HD and look in left hand pane for same folders..)
6. Reinstall Mail from optional extras section on DVD
7. Download 10.6.0- 10.6.6 Combo and install

Mail should now launch.

It works!

I can once again safely keep the Mail app in my dock without it going crazy and hogging all the resources. Keeping it open before resulted in 4.1 million Page Ins and 1 million page Outs in 8 hours!
Thank you, sir!
