A religiously oppressed state
On my iMac when I start up terminal this is displayed...

Why is that showing up and how do I stop it. It didn't always do that, and it doesn't do it on any of my other computers.

Those mail messages are usually produced by cron jobs.

There is a mail command that you can use from the terminal to read them. It's not especially user friendly, but just press return at the mail prompt to read them, 'd' for delete, 'x' for exit. man mailx for more details.
