ABC is turning it into a sitcom

ABC’s new pilot is so unusual, a caveman might have pitched it. The Alphabet has just green lit a pilot based on those hilariously touchy cavemen from the Geico ads.

‘Cavemen’ will feature three pre-historic men fighting for respect as they try to live regular lives in modern day Atlanta. Planned as a single-camera comedy, the show will be written by Joe Lawson, who also created the original 30-second commercial spots. As you may recall, the Geico ads featured modern cavemen getting offended at the company slogan “so easy a caveman could do it” in regards the insurance company’s user-friendly website.

Variety.com reports that Daniel Rappaport, Guymon Cassady, Will Speck and Josh Gordon are attached as executive producers. And while actors Jeff Daniel Phillips and Ben Weber play the cavemen in the commercials, it’s not clear whether they’ll be making the jump to the TV show.

Even though the Geico cavemen commercials are pretty good and probably the most memorable ads to come along in a while, I’m not sure this series will work. I’ve always considered the gag the joke equivalent of a one night stand. The California Raisins did have that little spin-off claymation show from their commercials in the 80’s, but that lasted all of what, a week or two?

No word yet on when ‘Cavemen’ will air.

Cavemen did invent the wheel and discover fire, its only fair that they get their own sitcom. :D

I wonder how much more car insurance this will sell.

Sounds like Encino Man

Remember this classic?

The commercials were good, but I do not think that they would work as anything longer than a commercial.

Oh brother. Why do "they" (TV networks, etc) have to drag everything out? This won't work, in my opinion.

yeah, lets turn the Bud-Weis-Er frogs into a puppet show for children.

You have got to be friggen kidding me, this whole metaphor for a caveman being stupid, is just retarded.

i never thought anything but the very first commercial was funny.

the whole "real cavemen have feelings" angle is utterly pointless and is a horrible running gag.

Before I was even done reading the article, I was thinking the same thing as everyone else: what works as a :30 commercial will probably bomb as a 30:00 series.

They did have a comedy show about cavemen back in the '60s. Anyone remember It's About Time? Goofy show. Essentially it was Gilligan's Island set in the Stone Age, with astronauts landing in prehistoric times. Then for the second season, the astronauts returned to the 20th century with some of their caveman friends.

I don't know whether the cavemen got car insurance, though.

hah. funny website. i'd be curious to see it. why not? i don't need to judge it til then. and i find the commercials pretty humorous. also a fan of the good ole caveman lawyer..... ahhh, we miss you phil

Reminds me of the sketches from SNL with Phil Hartman as a caveman lawyer transplated to modern times.

Even with him in it, the sketches were only good for a few laughs.

Is it me or does every Geico commercial piss me off?

Beyond annoying. Beyond comprehension. ABC Network.

(shameless ripoff of XM)

One of my favorite Geico commercials was the one with Charo speaking trash-Spanglish. So funny, I felt like throwing up! :p

I love the commercials, and I guess I'm not as pessimistic as some of the people here. I think they can make it work. I'm not saying the definitely will, just that's it's possible and that I hope they do.
