ABC is turning it into a sitcom
ABCs new pilot is so unusual, a caveman might have pitched it. The Alphabet has just green lit a pilot based on those hilariously touchy cavemen from the Geico ads.
Cavemen will feature three pre-historic men fighting for respect as they try to live regular lives in modern day Atlanta. Planned as a single-camera comedy, the show will be written by Joe Lawson, who also created the original 30-second commercial spots. As you may recall, the Geico ads featured modern cavemen getting offended at the company slogan so easy a caveman could do it in regards the insurance companys user-friendly website.
Variety.com reports that Daniel Rappaport, Guymon Cassady, Will Speck and Josh Gordon are attached as executive producers. And while actors Jeff Daniel Phillips and Ben Weber play the cavemen in the commercials, its not clear whether theyll be making the jump to the TV show.
Even though the Geico cavemen commercials are pretty good and probably the most memorable ads to come along in a while, Im not sure this series will work. Ive always considered the gag the joke equivalent of a one night stand. The California Raisins did have that little spin-off claymation show from their commercials in the 80s, but that lasted all of what, a week or two?
No word yet on when Cavemen will air.
