Just to add another success story with reapplying thermal paste:

i thought my mbp late 2011 13 i5 was just not ready for nowadays tasks anymore, because the cpu fan was constantly spinning up to 100% e.g. in final cut pro and everything was just a tad to slow. i then checked the frequency with the intel power gadget and realized that the cpu was only able to sustain a mere 2,2 ghz @99°C under constant load, thats below the base frequency of 2,4 ghz!

Long story short, i completely removed the old... stuff, whatever that is what apple thinks may work as thermal paste (see picture) and applied some new artic silver 5.

The result: New Macbook! It's now able to sustain a turbo boost of max 2,8 ghz for as long as i want it under full load. thats a speed increase of roundabout 20%! But still not perfect, theroretically it should be able to reach 3,0 ghz, but i have never seen more than the 2,8.
