TikTok is rolling out the ability for users to upload videos that are up to 10 minutes long, an increase from the previous 3-minute time limit imposed on the app, the company has confirmed to TechCrunch.

TikTok has been testing out the feature for several months and is now slowly rolling it out to all users. TikTok has had a history of increasing the maximum time length for videos on the app in an effort to keep pace with the changing dynamics of the content created.

Initially, videos were limited to just 15 seconds, before they were increased to 60 seconds, then 3 minutes, and now 10 minutes. The 10-minute option aims to "unleash even more creative possibilities for our creators around the world," TikTok said.

TikTok users will be notified when they're able to upload 10-minute-long videos, as long as they're running the latest app version.

Ah, 10 minute videos, it’s like 2006 YouTube! In 10 years, we should be on track for 15 minutes!

I don't intend to sound harsh, but wow a widio platform that in 2022 is testing a "feature" which will allow people to upload videos that are a massive 10 minutes long. Seriously, have the news of thiss small website called YouTube (whitch btw has supported way longer videos for years now) how far behind the curve are you?

I think that too often, social media companies try to be everything at the same time instead of being great for one particular thing. Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc. have different purposes, and trying to abstract that creates confusion and useless features. Maybe there is a demand for 10 minutes videos on TikTok, personally I would always go to Youtube for that, I expect TikTok videos to be less than a minute, even less than 30 seconds. As I would always prefer Instagram for stories over Facebook or Twitter. Stop trying to do a one stop social media, people have different needs and some platforms are more suited for their specific needs than others.

Everyone is trying to take over the world. They start by opening a niche, but eventually they want to grow, so they try to become everything to everyone. At some point, what's the difference between TikTok and YouTube?

It's a cool concept, however looking at my younger sibs viewing the current 3 minute TicTok video posts makes me think that we're conditioning a generation to have some kind of ADD. I'm sure there are (or will be) studies somewhere on this. At least 10 minutes expands the level of attention a bit longer-ish.

The max allowed length is rarely an issue. People are still going to upload a simple story in 10 parts of 5 seconds each.
The likelihood of people watching multiple videos to get the story is far less than a single long one. Just look at the view metrics on any of them. You'll always see the 2nd and 3rd post in the story have FAR less views. Clearly, people don't bother to go through the hassle to navigate to watch other videos in a series.

It also means your single video will benefit from vitality and the algorithm benefits bestowed on a single popular video, which you don't get from multiple video series.

Well, there’s definitely appeal in short form video. I don’t personally get it, as nothing of value to me could be conveyed via a 10 second video (and rarely in something less than 3 minutes). I’m typically not watching YouTube videos for a quick meme or a short laugh, I’m usually watching information of a more informative (albeit possibly infotainment) nature (and occasionally sketch comedy, but sketches tend to be 3 minutes or longer quite frequently). 10 minutes tends to be quite short for the style of video I prefer, and YouTube has a lot of the sorts of stuff I find interesting in longer form video.

That said, I don’t think I’d ever use TikTok. Frankly, it has a reputation that dissuades long form content (even if they add support to it). The reputation is like the worst parts of YouTube (“heyyyy you guise, it’s [random-annoying-YouTube-channel] here!”, think of something from a Techmoan puppet segment) combined with vertical video. Not the place I’d go for DIY crafting tutorials or for the longer form documentary and quasi-documentary content I tend to prefer (which likely would get fewer views on TikTok than they do on YouTube, given the attention span of the TikTok audience and their preference for super short videos that might as well be .gifs with audio [oh okay, and theoretically 30-60fps playback]).
