Today i found a Russian site that offered 3gp streams of Youtube videos - these aren't directly from Youtube but converted on the fly - like a lot of other sites but this one adds the option of streaming as well as downloading.

Using a helper script to pass the stream to MPlayer, playback was between 15-20% CPU on my G3 iBook - I've attached the script and mplayer for anyone crazy enough to want to try it - both should reside in /Applications

When a 3gp link is first clicked, TFF will ask you which app should be used - point it to MobileTube.

*I also tried this in OS9 - downloading not streaming, as you have to change the filetype of 3gp video into something QuickTime understands.
Alas, this wouldn't work - I suspect something particular about the transcoding the site uses.*

Ironic though, that streaming does work in RetroZilla/Windows 2000/Virtual PC!

EDIT: Yes, it does work with Classilla in OS9! The MP4 options are actually MPEG4 not h264 video.....

That's good news then! This site should then be added to a list of accessible sites in one of these Web 1.1 threads I've seen somewhere - I can't seem to remember where... The list certainly should be in OS9 thread wikipost too... as in "Compatible OS 9 websites as of today" or something like that.

But if it works this way, dowloading and playing on QuickTime, certainly I could use Browservice to go to another similar website, where I could download a compatible format... so I could have a better experience, no?

My understanding of Browservice is that for example you can play youtube as normal as it's happening on the serving machine (but that's where the audio resides too) - you'd also have to adjust the refresh rate accordingly.

Yes, exactly. And the dev apparently is working (or was working) in a way to pass through the audio too.

When I tested youtube as normal, The video was a slideshow, not even close to a smooth playback. That's why I thought of the solution above as a temporary workaround - download and play on QuickTime.

Probably, my Raspberry Pi 3B is taking a big hit, or maybe with the latest Pi 4 and a bit more RAM on it, I could have a better performance overall. Scrolling pages with Browservice for example, is a little bit laggy.

EDIT: BTW, nice song =P
