Trying to understand if the Youtube Dolby Atoms demos are truly being sent Dolby Atoms. I have a Vizio Elevate sound bar that rotates the speakers to a up position when playing the Dolby Atoms. This works with Apple TV and Apple Music, but when I play the Youtube Demos it doesn't rotate the speakers. I do get the "Surround sound" through my speakers. The same problem with Prime Videos and Dolby Atoms movies. I don't have Hulu or NetFlix.

It says links to download the Dolby Atmos and Vision files are in the description. You’ll have to download the files and probably use VLC to watch them.
Thanks and YES that is what I had to do. Posted it to reaffirm that YouTube only plays 5.1 and Dolby Vision. Most of the demos don't tell you this and want you to subscribe to their web site (More junk mail) :) :).

Just to correct a small point, YT doesn’t support Dolby Vision, only HDR

I would humbly submit my Surround Speaker Check tvOS app's in-app subscription as an additional resource for Dolby Atmos demo content. I've put thousands of hours into producing content specifically designed to showcase Dolby Atmos spatial audio. If you're looking to see just how good your sound bar's up firing speakers work, there are a couple of jet-fly by tracks which will do just that: An F-18 spatial object test track, and a Spatial Lab episode where I record a squadron of F-35 jets flying overhead. Lots of other types of demo content too (2+ hours worth now), but the jets currently give the most obvious examples for auditioning Atmos height content, imo.

Jeff;
Are you on AVS forum?
I’m “mtbdudex” there also.

I have a dedicated basement HT that’s currently 9.3.6 Atmos, 2 rows with 4 seats each.
Interested in your demo material.

I’m in the middle of HT 3.0 updates, here’s older picture, got all new seats 4 weeks ago.

Nice! - that looks like an awesome room to spend time in with family & friends! And judging by the condition of your old seats, it is indeed well used and enjoyed! (As it should be!) Ooh - is that an actual Star Wars #1 I spy on your back wall? :)

Yes, I am on AVS, though I don't post often. Not sure why... I guess the Apple TV threads seems to be mostly center around troubleshooting Dolby Vision, HDR, etc. I'm primarily focused on audio so I just don't know I would have much to contribute.

You can find my demo material by searching for "Surround Speaker Check" in the tvOS App Store. Aside from the various surround speaker and subwoofer tests, the "Spatial Audio Tests" and the "Spatial Lab" sections in the app are where you'll find an eclectic range of Dolby Atmos demo content, ranging from the F-18 and F-35 jet fly-overs I previously mentioned, to surround sound music experiments and outdoor field recordings captured using either a surround mic array or an ambisonic microphone. (Perhaps my favorite is the Spatial Lab episode; "Dolby Atmos is Going Downhill", where I take a full-size ambisonic mic rig downhill skiing and then produce the results for Dolby Atmos in the home theater!) There are many gigabytes of content spanning over 2 hours, with more always in development.

There's also an iOS version of the app for AirPlay usage, but since I see you you have an Apple TV 4K, you may find the native tvOS app more convenient. Both apps offer three "free forever" Dolby Atmos core 5.1 test tracks, while a subscription unlocks the bulk of the other test tracks and Atmos demo content.

Happy to answer any questions you might have about the app.

Yeah, same here. My setup shows Atmos on Apple TV+ but never on YouTube, even with Atmos demo videos. Turns out YT doesn’t support it at all. Gonna try that Surround Speaker Check app - those jet flyovers sound fun.

YouTube by now supports AC-3 and E-AC-3 5.1 multichannel audio, but Atmos metadata gets lost in the upload process.

That’s a tin replica, but better than that:
I’m fortunate enough to have been 15 years old in 1977 .. saw Star Wars 3 times in the theater that summer.
Oh, I also was an avid comic book collector then, even before SW came out.
I myself bought these, in store.

Sweet! Those look in mint or near-mint condition! I probably have most all the early SW comics as well, but I'm quite sure they are pretty beat to hell. Lol

Hey, nice to see my apps up on your big screen! 😀 Looking forward to your feedback.

Any video on You Tube that says the quality is better than 5.1 sound and 4k vision is incorrect, they are the best available.
Youtube supports 8k HDR (HDR10(+) in PQ/HLG and Rec. 2020(not DCI-P3)) fine and this video is 16k
I know this because I used to be able to download it using yt-dlp/youtube-dl in that resolution. But now youtube is very strict about combination devices&hw/browsers&players/codecs/subscription for what resolution they will serve, as well as they limit more what is uploaded (not sure what they actual will keep).
Also for some reason they don't support in players anymore some resolutions between 4k and 8k.

YouTube have support for immersive audio by using Eclipsa (https://www.eclipsaapp.com/) which i think most people haven't heard about, and very few players support (i think only Samsung TVs from this year does), but I am pretty sure that support will increase as it is an open royalty free standard. If it will compete with Dolby Atmos remains to be seen.

Jeff, is your Dolby Atmos encoding as 7.1.4 channel based or object based?

Reason I ask that is there was a big blow up when it was discovered that many Disney / Marvel movies were NOT Atmos object oriented mixed, rather coded to 7.1.4. Hence no front wides, and overheads were coded to Top front and top rear. Which really sucks for many with 9.1.6 like I have.

A Dolby object panning will use all the speakers present in it path, while hard coding to channels won’t, will skip some.

This is a sucky thing.

Also, why only a yearly subscription?
Others offer monthly and yearly.

I’m also checking out Odysound, it has a few free scenes to go thru.

It’s object based encoded, as utilized all my 9.1.6 speakers … front wides and front heights (on screen wall angled to MLP) / mid / rear heights (on rear wall angled to MLP) actively used in the free demos

It depends on the track. The test tracks are pretty self-explanatory, but the Spatial Lab tracks use a variety of production techniques as the whole premise of the series is about experimenting with creating wild surround soundscapes for the home theater. I can say that I generally prefer to produce static music content using a channel-based 7.1.4 bed (for a variety of reasons), although this can change depending on the project. Foley and sound effects are typically printed as objects though, which will of course light up your wides and .6 speakers so long as the objects touch those speaker locations.

If you're looking for specific 9.1.6 content examples, the "F-18 Fighter Jets" located in the Spatial Audio Object Test page will most definitely wake up your 9.1.6 height speakers, while the Spatial Lab episodes titled "F-35 Jets in Spatial Audio" and "Tomb of Horrors" should also make good use of your full 9.1.6 set-up.

Also, why only a yearly subscription?

This is just the business model I am going with at the moment. I believe it is a fair price given the amount of content that is included. And of course there is no obligation for a recurring payment; you can cancel anytime and still retain full access for the entire year.
