Hey guys new here, just got a 11 Pro Max and been trying out HDR videos and Youtube and Vimeo. Now Vimeo app plays HDR just fine, everything looks bright and vibrant as it should even only having my phone brightness turned two third way up. However Youtube HDR video is much dimmer and I don't see the 1080p60 HDR or any HDR option in the three dot Quality settings. Logic tells me Youtube app HDR playback doesn't support the 11 series yet since it's too new? I do have the latest YT app installed yesterday and have everything else updated too, anyone can confirm this?

Update: Working now via new Youtube App update.

Try this channel that definitely offers HDR content.

My iPhone X can choose up to 1080p HDR anyway.

On this other link I can choose 1080p60 HDR. Check out that channel for other examples, tell me if this is what you are lolkong for.

Yep, I've been waiting for the youtube app to be updated to support the 11 series with HDR, nothing yet. The iPhone X took several months to get HDR support in youtube, but the Xs series only took like a week from what I remember. Hopefully it gets updated soon, I really want to see some HDR on this phone.

Ohhhh I see what OP means now, you don’t get that choice. I had forgot YT May not support 11 Pro yet. I thought that was limited to hardware capability only.

@m0sher yeah I tried all these, no hdr. But iPhone X is supported tho like johaen8 said.

@johaen8 looks like you’re right, glad I’m not the only one having this, It’s definitely not a hardware issue coz Vimeo hdr plays fine on this phone.

I thought somebody said in another post about this that it’s to do with a disagreement (yes another one) between Google and Apple?

But then, why would they allow it on iPhone X but not the newer ones?

Indeed how very strange. It's ironic how trillion dollar companies couldn't solve simple things like this and the customers suffer from it.

Because, at heart, these trillion dollar companies are run by inherently disingenuous toss pots whose only interest is stroking their own egos. Ultimately they don’t give a rats ass about customers
The other way of looking at this is, it’s a thorny technical issue that’s taking longer to work out than originally planned. 😁

My understanding is that Apple does not support the VP9 codec, which YouTube uses to encode anything above 1080P60. I assumed it didn’t work because YouTube HDR required VP9, bit that wouldn’t explain why it worked on iPhone X though...

So I didn’t dream that there was some disagreement between these two idiotic companies then? Isn’t it just pathetic??!!

Yes - and it seems quite petty on both companies' ends.

Even a toaster supports H264/5 decoding nowadays (which is what Safari supports).

Youtube and Google are using VP9, which is more efficient, and has Chrome support since 2013.

Apple won't add VP9 support. Google only encodes H264 up to 1080p or 1440p (I forgot but surely not 4K) and won't add support 4K on H264.

Personally I think Apple should be the one budging here since their users are losing out on 4K content. What I do is use Safari generally (more energy efficient) and Chrome for Youtube (and internet video in general - Safari is lacking in this regard)

I also use Chrome for YouTube viewing. But even in Chrome, MacOS does not support hardware decoding of VP9 (available since Kaby Lake), so it decodes in software which uses a ton of system recourses. Craziness...

HEVC is more efficient when properly supported IIRC. I’m pretty sure Google is the only one actually using VP9, nobody else does. Nobody wins here though, Apple could easily just add support for VP9 and we could all move on.

Google has updated the YouTube iOS app 4 times since the 11 series’ release on Sept 20, and they’ve failed to include HDR support for these new devices each time. Last year it took them less than a week to add HDR support for the Xs series so it’s clearly something that can be done easily. This year it just seems like they’ve totally forgotten about it.

it falls under anti competitive practice when using one platform as leverage against another company you compete with in another sector I‘d say.

Kinda, sorta. Not always. Especially in view of the current format war between Apple and Google.

Looks like the latest update has just added support for HDR on the newest iPhones. Just opened a HDR vid on YouTube and it now shows ‘1080p HDR’. Can anyone else confirm this is working with theirs?

Yes, I just checked after the update, and HDR is working on my 11 Pro!

Looks amazing too even in lowly 1080P...haha

It really irks me that YouTube does not share any relevant information in the update notes for their iOS app.
