I couldn't figure out why YouTube suddenly started playing back like crap (running 10.6.8 on a Mac Pro) ... for exmaple when I would click a video it would start playing the sound, but no video would come in for about 5 seconds .. and when it did it was out of sync. Also I kept getting frame stutters every 2 seconds (Safari only) and some videos kept looping the first 3 seconds for no reason and refused to let me jump to a later part of the video.
I navigated to this page: http://www.youtube.com/html5 and clicked leave HTML 5 trial and it fixed my problems. They opt you in almost automatically (I remember disabling HTML5 playback in my settings in the past) but you have to go here now to opt out. If you are experiencing issues with playback give it a try.
