Google is currently promoting a free three-month trial of YouTube Red, its ad-free video service offering subscribers uninterrupted music, background app play, and offline access to YouTube-hosted content.

In addition to allowing users to test out the personalized stations via the new YouTube Music mobile app, the trial provides access to original programming produced by YouTube creators as well as the full range of YouTube Kids channels.

A free Google Play Music account is also included as an extra perk, offering access to an extensive catalog of streamed music and unlimited storage for uploading their existing music library.

After the free trial concludes, subscribers pay $9.99 per month. Users can cancel their YouTube Red trial and full membership at any time. It's also worth noting that if users cancel their Google Play Music subscription they lose access to YouTube Red and no longer qualify for the free trial.

The limited time offer is open to U.S. residents only and ends July 4.

(Thanks, Nick!)

I simply use a 3rd party YouTube client to avoid ads & enable background app play. No need to pay Google $10/mo.

Which YouTube app do you use?

The trial sounds good, but I would have no intention of continuing to paid subscription.... Anyway USA only so no use.

I'm afraid I'm all subscriptioned out. My husband and I really need to sit down and take stock of all the subscriptions we have and pare them down. The only reason we haven't yet is poop keeps happening and we are just too exhausted to deal with it all. These things creep up on you and really sneak away at the budget. I don't even know at this point if we have a subscription to Red. I think one of us ended up with a free trial subscription with the purchase of one of our Androids. I guess we will find out soon enough.

Ad free? Most people don't have to worry about ads if they have something like Ad Block Plus installed (free).
Save offline? Why?
Background play? If I just wanted audio, I'd listen to podcasts.

I just don't see the need for Red.

I imagine that the primary focus (considering the save offline and background play features) are mobile users, not those on desktops/laptops.

Because you listen to podcasts you don't see the need for background play? Odd.

In the US, it comes with Google Play Music too, so the value for both isn't bad. I prefer to watch News, Fallon, and several other shows on Youtube, since I cut the cord and don't bother with cable. The value proposition, in that case, isn't bad. I also like to support the content creators, and Youtube Red pays them for my views.

THIS.

I love supporting good content and putting my money where my mouth is, however I'm always wary of subscriptions as it's easy to spend more on something than you intended to.

If just for things you lose interest in or don't notice that eventually a competitor is cheaper and/or better.

Subscriptions promote laziness and companies are rarely there to exhaust themselves on value when they know that laziness and the hectic of people's lives is what keeps them loyal the best.

I don't even think it's always with bad intentions, but it is the nature of things that you try your hardest when you have to play all your cards just like your competitors.

Hi! I found two ProTube apps in the App Store. Are you referring to ProTube for YouTube by Jonas Gessner?
If yes, does it keep playing in the background (as if you just want to turn off your device and listed to the music without having to watch the video)?
TIA
Yes & yes. You're welcome! :)

Youtube will pay the content creators on the ad-supported interface as well, as long as the view count is high enough and their content doesn't violate Youtube's ad content policies.

Right, but not when users have Ad-Block, right? That's what I was referring to, when someone suggested it earlier in the thread.

Thanks! I didn’t know such an App existed, and for free. I tried YouTube Red once and this is the only thing I missed out on, background playback.

Same place i'm in, I chose to keep Google Music because of great streaming bitrate, no silly DJ stations, and YouTube Red/no ads is included I find I have started watching more documentary and interesting live news feeds , plays on everything I own. I added Tunein Premium for $7.99/month because of unlimited Audio Books. I'm dropping Spotify, Audible, SiriusXM, Amazon Prime and Apple Music. So I have everyting I need for under $20/month Cutting the cord is next challenge but the Content providers clearly are winning that battle. Stealing or whatever one calls it isn't an option I'm interested in.

IMO "you Tube ReD" always sounded like the porno section of youtube. I imagine if they would have branded the idea a bit better they would enjoy more success in the concept.

Ah. That wasn't clear. Thanks for the clarification. And, yes, if viewers don't see ads due to an ad-blocker then Youtube doesn't compensate the content creator.

I either do something else to distract me from non skippable ads, watch it (6s), or skip it. Background playback is also not my main concern. I only watch video on YouTube. I use dedicate personal music library for true unlimited background playback.

So, YouTube red is useless for me. I only wish YouTube stop promoting me to subscribe after i reject their free trial offer so many times.

I always roll my eyes when the subject of ads come up on MR. There seem to be too large a group of people that don’t have any regard for content creators.

Ditto. But I use the free Spotify tier, and silence the audio during the ads.

I usually let them play, or for the first 30 seconds, unless I'm in a hurry. Gotsta let them content creators earn their side hustle!
