Has Apple addressed this? 3G Youtube video on the current iPhones looks terrible, but I'm sure it would look downright abysmal on iPhone 4's new screen.

Apple has nothing to do with this. The problem is with AT&T and other mobile carriers. They want the lower quality which is smaller. Thus, is puts less strain on the network.

I resolve this by downloading Youtube videos to my desktop using RealPlayer Downloader and then converting the videos I want to h.264, after which I move them to iTunes.

You get much better quality, but lose flexibility, admittedly.

Oddly enough, AT&T allowed it's much maligned Backflip to retain its "Stream High Quality" Youtube option intact over 3G.

Would you happen to know the Backflip to iPhone ratio? My guess is that for every two Backflips there are fifty iPhones.

That kind of ruins it though. You dont browse youtube and then download a video at home. If youre on the go and a friend says "dude check this on youtube" then thats how it goes.

The "mxtube" jailbreak app really comes in handy for this issue.

But the problem is google only encodes two files for mobile devices. The edge quality and the wifi quality. Until they switch 3G to capturing the wifi version it wont ever change.

Sorry this is late but I was searching and just say this and wanted to post a solution for those not looking to jailbreak. One good option is use truveo. The option I use and like is to just use the m dot youtube dot com site (not sure if you can put links in here so replace the dots appropriately). It is the html5 version of youtube and give high quality video you can also add the bookmark to the homepage so it works really well.

I've been using m.YouTube.com since it was announced. It's worked great for what I was looking to do.

Why did you make this thread if you could already watch high quality YouTube videos over 3G?

Because the thread was made:

1. Before the release of the iPhone 4.
2. Before the debut of the new mobile YouTube.

The stock Apple youtube app is still relatively unchanged and still has terrible 3G streaming quality.

Didn't notice that. Sorry.
