Google-owned YouTube this week said it is "experimenting" with a new video search results carousel that appears after searches for select keywords.

General-YouTube-Feature-Redux.jpg

According to YouTube, the video results carousel will use AI to highlight clips from videos that "will be most helpful for your search query," which essentially means that it will take clips from videos and play them right in results, so people may not need to click into a video to find the information they're looking for.

Google uses AI overviews for Google Search, but the YouTube version will differ. AI won't summarize videos, and will simply pull clips from them. It is not clear the AI-selected clips will encourage users to watch a full video, or cause fewer people to engage with videos, but AI integration into Google Search has impacted traffic to websites.

Right now, the feature is being tested with a small number of YouTube Premium users for English search queries, and the AI-generated results are most likely to surface when users search for information about products, or for locations and things to do in those locations. Two example searches provided include "best noise cancelling headphones" and "museums to visit in San Francisco."

YouTube has not provided details on what the AI will prioritize, so video creators may have another metric to optimize for in the future should this functionality see a wider rollout.

Why doesn’t YouTube allow 3rd Party Clients? I don’t like their UI and recent changes. I miss the iOS 3 YouTube UI. Some of my best YouTube experiences were on those on iPhone 2G in 2011

Hopefully it works well. Expecting a slow rollout of the feature. Have to test and see but think it might be useful.

I always use the DuckDuckGo video search, what mostly shows YouTube videos, because the YouTube search is hiding many videos.
On YouTube you can enter a complete title and it isn't even included in the complete search results if they don't want you to find it.

Sometimes I feel like the times to discover new YouTube channels has reached an end. More and more, when I search for certain topics, most of what I get is low quality content. Maybe this new AI curated results give me a more quality outcome. Or maybe some good but modest creators get buried by it.

I guess it is time to make a list of all the channels I watch (no, I don’t log into YouTube to watch videos), and get RSS feed apps that support YouTube channels in order to keep up to date with them.

Oh, I am sure it will be added to their other "Useful" search features, like:-

- For you
- People also watched
- Previously watched
- Explore
- Shorts
- Garfield liked these videos

They better be careful

If they pollute everything with AI garbage, they’re gonna lose premium subscribers like myself.

Reeder does on iOS and Mac.

Why? Like, seriously- why? Why not let the creators attach keywords, and then rank them like they do? What, are they trying to decreasing viewing of videos?
