YouTube TV, the streaming television service that launched in April, was today updated with support for AirPlay, allowing video streamed from the iPhone or the iPad to be played on an Apple TV.

The service has been available on the iPad and the iPhone through a YouTube TV app since it launched, but YouTube has not yet made an app available on the Apple TV.

Prior to today, Chromecast was the only way to broadcast content from the app to a television set, but with AirPlay support, YouTube TV content is also available through the Apple TV.

Priced at $35, YouTube TV is only available in a limited number of cities, including Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

YouTube TV is a standalone streaming service that's focused on a mobile first experience, and it is separate from the YouTube Red premium service. It includes access to ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, CW, Disney, ESPN, FX, USA, and dozens of other major cable channels, alongside standard YouTube video content. Premium channels like Showtime are available for an additional fee.

For customers who want to try YouTube TV, the service includes a one-month free trial. YouTube TV can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

I'll try it once it's on AppleTV, but for now I'm relatively happy with PS Vue. It's the only one I've tried where the local channels actually work.

I'm using the free chromcast google gives. I'm waiting for Xbox one support.
Are you waiting for XB1 support for the ATV? Cuz the XB1 already has chromecast support. I have one hooked up to mine through the secondary HDMI (sat/cable) port utilizing the TV app. Also if you have the Youtube app on your XB1 you can cast directly to it (if you're signed in).

I'll try that out, casting from YouTube works fine to Xbox one but the YouTube tv app won't cast.

I haven't been able to get local channels to work. It thinks I'm in Alaska, and to top it off I changed out my cable modem and now I get some IP warning, which has created this total cluster that Vue tech support can't resolve. I'm sure a few more hours on the phone will eventually get me somewhere but right now it's just not worth the hassle.

What not just make an Apple TV app?

Never understood why YouTube disappeared from Apple TV in the first place.

The whole concept of "you"tube is totally meaningless now that they are making a play to be an ordinary tube, showing professional content. Perhaps they should think of a different name for the live TV division.

I'd love to have a TV content service from youtube in the UK able to bring all the US shows I want to watch. Currently I acquire them another route that is very convenient and most providers would be hard pushed to offer the service I want AT ANY PRICE. The licensing probably isn't possible for both region and without massive caveats. I hope one day, someone can offer a universal package able to draw together all TV on demand. Here's to dreaming.

I have a similar problem with DirectTV Now. It won't show me local channels, even though I'm in NYC. And the CBS app will show me live TV thru the AppleTV, but not when I'm using Android TV (both connected to the same router).

There are times when I really want to uncut the cord.

No issues here with YouTube tv, I'm getting all the local NYC channels.

I would give their TV service a try if there was an ATV app.

Although, the current YouTube app on the ATV is way too basic. The ATV3 version is not that bad, but the ATV4 version totally sucks.

What ATV are you referring to? The YouTube app is on both my ATV3s and ATV4. YouTube was removed from the ATV2 a few years ago.
