Zenphoto running on SLS?

I tried installing Zenphoto on SLS 10.6.2 today and could not even get the setup.php to load. Server kept reporting 500 errors. Googled to no avail. There is an htaccess file without the "." in front of it that other sites alluded to, but the instructions from the site didn't say anything about what to do with it. I tried many things, still 500 error.

Anyone ever get it working on SLS? Someone smarter care to take a crack at it?
