Looks like the first release from GreenBytes is now available. Mostly command-line based, but lots of advanced features are now available, such as mirroring/raid-z/L2ARC, etc.
 
Thanks for posting this. I didn't know that they had actually released something.

I've played around with ZFS, but never under OS X. I might give this version a try, but not on any machine I really care about. I'm sure they need to embed the software deep into OS X, and if they screw something up, there's a good possibility for data loss.

I've not tried it extensively yet, but the zfs on OS X project has been going on for many years. Don Brady, the main developer behind it, was a file system engineer at Apple. Lots of people including Brady himself have trusted their data to it for years, and there haven't been any documented cases of it losing data as far as I can tell. Given the data integrity features of zfs, it's probably safer to use than hfs+
