I installed Zipeg (a zip utility) onto my MBP with Lion, and told Zipeg to associate itself with .zip files. When I go into the Zipeg preferences, it says it is the default viewer for .zip files. But when I go into Finder and try to open a zip file, the default Apple zip handler extracts it. If I right-click on a .zip file in Finder and look at the Open With, it says that Archive Utility.app is the default handler. Why isn't Zipeg the default? Zipeg thinks it is, but it's not.
