Well I will admit that I thought the iphone would be much better than it turned out to be. I probably got caught in the hype a little bit. But truth be told at first during the honeymoon period I thought it was great. But the more I continued to use the phone, the more I started to notice how it keeps coming up short. It was great initially, but as time went on and I used it more, I just keep seeing more and more that it really is lacking in several areas. Now I have a decision to make.

I mentioned this in another thread recently. There is a similar vibe on the official apple forums. If you discuss a feature that's not present you get replies saying you can always get an android phone.
Hahaha... I remember complaining that an iPhone 3G didn't have MMS. Yes, it was added eventually, but the excuses people made. Oh boy... (It was like starting a forrest fire).
BearerOBadNews, I get it. You want an app that is available on Android. Don't let anyone tell you that you don't need it.
So what other reservations did you have, outside of mySMS?

I complained about the very same thing. Since then, I have send maybe two dozen picture messages, and that is probably a gross overestimate. I am not sure why I, personally, had such a problem with it. I guess I don't like being told what I can and can't do. Strangely, I still keep an iPhone.
There are rumors that later versions of iOS 5 and updates to Lion will bring this capability to the Mac. I believe them, and would find it to be really useful in school.
It's ironic that Apple already has an-in house example: Dashboard. I'm guessing we won't see this until the next major iOS release. If not, then it's time to move on.
I posted some earlier in this thread as it relates to cloud functionality or lack thereof. Off the top of my head, gimped bluetooth. No social integration besides twitter..I hate twitter lol. I don't see why I can't just install the social network I want and have it integrated. No dlna (and I'm not going to buy an apple tv just to get similar functionality, it should be built in). Browser needs improvement, heck I can't even upload from inside the browser. No onlive gaming. That's just to name a few things I realized after purchasing.
Then there are things I already knew coming in like no customization, no nfc, small screen. Those things I was willing to accept, but the culmination of the things I found out later (and that's not a complete list) plus the things I already knew I was giving up resulted in me really starting to regret this purchase.

No... let's be honest here. If he has all of those issues, that's fine, but clearly he would be happy with something else. This is why I asked. I won't try and talk him down from any of those points. Being able to name THAT many things one is displeased with (and assuming that these same problems are not present on other devices) basically leaves us with a no-brainer.
I've told lots of android users to get WhatsApp and most of them download the app from countless stores and official website or google searching, the majority didn't even know what the android market was...again not for the average Joe. almost anyone not knowing can download counterfeit apps, google has even had fake malware apps on it's own store so don't pretend like it's official appstore is malware free because its not, most of the time google deletes those apps because they show up on endgadget or gizmodo bad reping the shittouatthem,.,
That is your isolated experience. I would say quite a few people know what the android market is. Just look at the sales numbers. Doubt it's the same three people downloading that bazillion apps that have been downloaded so far. And it comes installed with your phone much like appstore.
If you are buying/downloading from places OUTSIDE the android market, you won't even be able to install those packages without messing with your settings. Another thing said average Joe would not know how to do, therefore making it a non-issue.
I just love how people say "my friends and I had this experience" and automatically transpose that as an indication of how the world receives Android, iOS, or whatever else the topic of discussion may be.
Sadly, it likely has to do with the countless threads started daily from people proclaiming that Android is better because it has this or that feature or the ever numerous threads asking (or flat out telling everyone here) which phone is better regarding the iPhone or the Android flavor of the month.
Responding to posts like that is one thing. But what I mean is if someone on this site dare make mention of a feature the iphone is lacking, instead of them being met with an open mind and a "how can we get this" mentality, they are met with attacks, excuses, sarcasm, and "what do I need that for?" comments.
When you port your number you only use one number. That's the whole point of porting your number.
And the last I heard was that Google added MMS capabilities.
For me the whole process of porting my number took all of five minutes. There's no trouble to it on Sprint
He voiced his opinion and said there are lots of things he wish the iPhone had that doesn't. So if he is that displeased it's time for him to get a new phone. He's not gonna magically get what he wants complaining in a thread on macrumors forum.
OP, unfortunately, unless you are on Sprint and use GV integration, there isn't a "clean" way to do it on ios. Remember that one of the core features of iOS (which is also a hinderance to some of these wish list features) is the security created by sand boxing apps. Apple purposefully Sandboxed core processes / features so that apps installed by users don't have access to potentially really personal information. I really don't see apple changing that anytime soon, because that security is one of the core iOS features.
I personally do the sprint + GV, but even that isn't a perfect solution, because any message I send out through GV via computer isn't synced or captured on my handset.

But I can access GV from my work computer, so I can send texts and check my voicemails. Additionally, when I'm overseas I use it to keep in touch with several people.
I would say that just because you don't have a use for it doesn't make it invalid. And not every request/desire for an improvement to ios has to be treated as an attack on your dogma. There really are people that like the iPhone but would like some additional features.
If there weren't communities like this with users pushing for improvements, many iPhone users would have been stuck with web apps for a longer time, wouldn't have mms, or have multitasking.
I'm not saying that every request is for everyone, but geez, cut the users of this community some slack.

SIRI over BT for text?
Okay, I was wondering how you handle incoming voice phone calls when the phone is elsewhere in the house...as opposed to having a need to answer every SMS.
But why not use SIRI? With your BT headset, SIRI will read to you new SMS's, and ask you to reply, and/or create SMS via SIRI with the BT headset. Works great for me in the car. One reason I upgraded to the 4S.
For me, my phone goes everywhere in the house with me, so that I can answer the cell phone, for text or voice calls...and other reminders. I can be more than 30 away from my phone. BT goes only 30 feet or so.
It is not exactly what you are looking for...having the same limits that voice calls would have via bluetooth. But if you accept not being near your phone for new voice coming in...you get the same for new text.
Just a suggestion. Apple gave you SIRI over BT...use it!
P.S. I haven't kept up, since my phone is always with me...but weren't there solutions for SMS/computer via AIM or other IM protocols in the past?
P.P.S. Is it true the mysms can't send SMS to the US even with Android? http://www.mysms.com/en/faq/faqandroid
