I'd instantly buy one if it had this.

That's a big if though!

This would be great, and an added layer for this would be hidden by the extra depth that many already expect from the Retina display. So it's hard to tell whether it's there or not.

I hope my skepticism is wrong here. It'd shock the competitors in the tablet industry.

This technology has been around for a while in the guise of Pulsetouch. Which was introduced into ICE units by Alpine around 2004 I think.

Interesting how all reference to this technology on Alpine's websites seems to have been quashed or vanished.

When I got rid of (mistakenly) my iPad 2 last year, after drinking the Cool Aid and believing there would be a second iPad release later on last year, I got a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7. The haptic feedback was one of the cool features I like about it. It's a nice feature, but I'm concerned the constant feedback draining the battery down. Hopefully, the user will be able to turn on and off.

I'm sorry if this is inappropriate but... What would the porn industry make of this?

Well they would love this! People knock the porn industry but without it the take up of new formats would never happen. ie BluRay has to thank the industry for a high adoption rate. It more than likely would have failed. Nowt wrong with a bit of frankie vaughn. I would love to see this interactivity. Would sure as hell beat playing angry birds :D

Aluminium MacBooks

With Senseg's technology there are no moving parts - haptic feedback is not provided through vibrator motors.

Instead, an electrostatic field is used to mimic the sensation of interacting with different materials - I've seen a few demos and it really is magical.

Did anyone ever get this effect on the first aluminium macbook pros?
I often felt a kind of texture when touching the case around the trackpad, and could never work out what it was until a colleague told me it was an electric charge, it was a very strong sensation, not like a shock but like the casing was suddenly quite rough textured.

I'm sure I wasn't the only one that noticed this right?

Well, this might get the stock to go up a few bucks this morning. Other than that, not happening today.

That would be awesome, but I just can't imagine how this would work with a rigid glass screen, and I don't think Apple would use a plastic screen just for this.

Doesn't require plastic screen. it sends a charge through a film attached to the screen (which if i understand correct can even be under the glass). That charge changes the friction and tricks you finger into feeling different surfaces.

Even though it seems extremely unlikely we will see this today "and touch" means something. And this is where the future is heading.

This sounds very interesting, and would be a major new feature. However, I am going to hedge my expectations for this kind of feature. If Apple delivers on it today, I'll consider it a bonus. :)

I think that its quite a possibility.

Watching the CNET video about Senseg though, its talks about modifying the electrostatic field to change the friction against the screen ...

I'm wondering: If it does it for the whole screen ( modifying the field ) , does that mean that multi-touch haptic feedback is not possible? or would it be able to modulate sections of the screen so that each finger can sense something different.

----------------------

Taking that a step further, it could open up a lot of possibilities for visually impared / blind users.

I think it's got a good chance of materializing, especially given Apple's invitation wording.

The concept and how it could be used is classic Apple - bringing something new to computing and opening the door to push apps further in what they can do.

I think the idea of a touch keyboard makes a ton of sense. Going beyond that, it could also further open up the iPad to those with vision issues, given you could provide on-screen feedback that isn't just the vibrating motor effect that is used with some devices now.

I dunno guys, this seems a little unrealistic right now. Pretty cool though.

Apple: don't talk about us by name, we have an NDA!
Senseg: a certain tablet maker based in Cupertino

Is this a Monty Python sketch?

Now that would be a killer feature. Haptics are what it would take for me to line up overnight. Otherwise I'm ordering online.
