iTunes software updates?

They do this all the time. Every time there is am iOS update, you get locked out of iTunes. 17.2.1 this time

Last major iOS update, iTunes didn't bring up my iPhone when connected, but it automatically came up with a patch software to download that made it compatible with older iTunes.

This time, nothing comes up, so question is, where do I go to find those software updates for iTunes, when on older versions.

You can run iTunes on the newest Macs using the free "Retroactive" utility.

Can't help with iPhone, I don't own a smartphone.
But I'm going to -guess- that at some point, iTunes isn't going to work with iPhones anymore (if that isn't the case already)...

It was working fine till iOS17. First time no patch popped up when phone plugged in after the iPhone update.
So iTunes isn't a thing on Mac anymore? Didn't realise that. I am very out of touch then.

Apple discontinued iTunes in 2019 with the introduction of MacOS Catalina. I still have it running on 2014 Mini that I use as a media server with MacOS Mojave. It just sits there and runs iTunes 24/7 with home sharing so I can access about 2tb of media on two Apple TV's, a Mac, iPhone and iPad. Still works fine for that - I just purchased some music a couple days ago and downloaded on that system.

I don't sync any iOS devices on that system though, it's only a server. I have a small media library on my primary Mac and use the Music and TV apps on MacOS Monterey to sync with my phone. I think the sun is setting on iTunes and I'll have to "bite the bullet" and use the media sharing feature on a newer version of MacOS when Apple completely breaks iTunes (which could happen any day, I guess).

It doesn't say it, that's the problem. Previously when updating iOS on iphone as soon as I plugged in it offers the upgrade
This time it said update to High Sierra, from Sierra to use iTunes, which I've done, and plugged in and nothing doing. I didn't want High Sierra because it's not compatible for a lot of my apps. And now I've updated and nothing offered?

That's my problem... I updated iOS. I never learn!!!! Now I've updated to High Sierra and have even more stuff that's not compatible. Apple, the gift that keeps on giving. I wish they'd warn what stops working when updating iOS

Started the MobileDeviceUpdater.app, but getting this ...

There is no network problem, I think this is the final turn of the screw for people like me who are running older iTunes but latest iOS. THEY said update to High Sierra and it would be compatible. It isn't.

I’ve just tested my iPhone SE 2 (iOS 17.2.1) in High Sierra (10.13.6) with iTunes 12.8.3.1 and it works. All you have to do is close iTunes, download and install MobileDeviceOnDemand.pkg & CoreTypes.pkg linked above and reboot.

Thank you for doing that. Interesting, so I need to update the iTunes as am on 12.8.2.3, I assumed that was the last one I could get on High Sierra. Will that erase the music or just overwrite the current iTunes.

From what I've read over night and the amount of people and threads related to this, worldwide who have this problem and have spent weeks since iOS17 on the phone to Apple support with no end result, but you have fixed the problem. You now have legend status. Thanks again for that, it's a real lifesaver for people like me who just can't afford to upgrade to the latest all singing dancing MacBook Pro.

Have this with iMovie, it tells me there's a software update to version 9.0.9 but when I click on it, it opens the App store but there is nothing there. My current iMovie is still 9.0.4 at the moment. Guessing it's an age thing?

iMovie 10.1.12 is the last version available for High Sierra. Make a backup of your current iMovie app (I prefer simply right-click & compress “iMovie”), delete it and try to download it again from the App Store https://apps.apple.com/app/imovie/id408981434?mt=12
It should say that the current version requires macOS 13 and offer you to download an older version.

If this doesn’t work, try from the Purchased tab of the App Store to click on iMovie’s download button.

If it still doesn’t work, download and install mas-cli v1.8.6 mas.pkg https://github.com/mas-cli/mas/releases then Swift 5 Runtime Support for Command Line Tools https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1998 make sure you are logged into your account in the App Store app and run from Terminal

Thanks, for some reason it's bringing this up. I've never had a refund or ever had a different Apple ID, ever. It's always been the same one,

Just eternally grateful for the iTunes help. I'll have another bash at this tomorrow. I'll live with the older iMovie if necessary, I quite often do some favours for a mate for his YouTube channel and that's only time I use it, but it's just incredibly slow.

I'm still getting the you need OS 13.* or higher etc. to install iMovie, and the 'different Apple ID' messages.

What is weird is that all the clips I had edited have gone white in viewer window for some reason. The worst part of this iMovie is it ignores when you turn off the 'optimising' when uploading, and makes a 20 minute job 6 hours because of it, and when it has done it, it whitens everything out, very washed out image. The optimising has never improved it, only made it worse. This may just be one of the things that you have to live with when on older OS

My suggestion was to back-up your current iMovie app, then delete it.
With iMovie in the Trash, it shouldn’t appear at all in the updates section.
You could then try to install it again from the App Store as described above.

Thanks, yeh, I did put it in the trash, didn't delete it though, Put back after when didn't work. I'll give that a go.

EDIT Not able to do this one. I wonder if there is a download for '10' that you can just put in the Application folder over the old '9' or whether 10 just doesn't work on High Sierra

Out of interest, how do you know if you've all the security updates that were released when you install an out of date OS? 10.13.6 had about 20 security updates till 2020, are they included in the download do we know, Is there a way of checking anywhere? The installs only show the HS, but App store didn't show any updates, and no idea why there are two HS installs, or why one is 13.6

The last security update is 17G14042, so you should see that string in your “About this Mac” window, after you click on 10.13.6.
The page above has links to all of Apple’s pages for High Sierra security update, so you can just download the DMG and install it.

It's 10.13.6 (17G66) I have installed. Don't see that or how far back it is on that list

So presumably I don't go through every one listed for 10.13.6, just the bottom one, or do I..?

And what are the ones crossed out but still have downloads. The last one is 1.25 GB but penultimate is over 2GB so can't just do the last one then. Thought they may have been collective as they went on so you only need last one, but nope

According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_iTunes the last compatible version for macOS 10.13 is iTunes 12.8.3

I don't know what happened but a few months ago, testing older macOS versions, only High Sierra is unable to check for updates... Could it be that Apple did something in the backend? Maybe...
