If i ever win the lottery i will buy one of these just for gaming. Waste of money (just for gaming) or not :D

I'm very happy to say I'm getting a 12-core on Wednesday...

Two 2.93GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon (12-core)
8GB (4X2GB) SDRAM
ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB
2TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
Two 18x SuperDrives
Magic Mouse + Magic Trackpad

It's replacing a 2002 PowerMac G4 (Dual 1GHz; 1.5GB Ram; 80GB HD)

Totally trading up. Getting two 27-inch Displays in a few weeks from Apple.

Psyched!!

Wow what a massive performance increase you will see! What do you normally use your Powermac for?

???

I read this and say, who the heck rated this as negative? Maybe one of those trolls out there
Seriously, are they thinking that it's a bad thing that pictures of the Mac Pro was released? Really.

64 GB of memory? Wow...

Man, that's way more than an older iMac's total disk space! Storage in all areas has really improved over a few years! The 2004 (or is it 2003) iMac G5 "Hero" had 80 GB total HD space (at least my brother's did). To think that the Mac Pro has 64 GB RAM...MADNESS (in a good way). That computer is OVER 9000!!!!!!

Still hate the fact that tons of people are getting their Mac Pros with 5870s but the Apple store still has the upgrade kit as "unavailable."

They should at least start selling them, even if they say, "ships in 5-8 weeks" or some crap like that.

Oh well, maybe it will happen soon and it will be worth the wait anyway it looks like.

The 6-core 3.33Ghz would actually be better for gaming. But yeah I am drooling for one of those 12-cores for the edit suite at work.

Wouldn't it be nice if Final Cut Pro actually knew how to use more than one cpu!

Fantastic design, but doesn't really match up with the price tag. It's a niche product, for rich people.

I just got mine today and love it. I got the 6 core since the only app i use that im aware of that uses all cores is Maya. The rest i use i don't think uses everything. (Photoshop cs5, Zbrush, Unity 3D, corel painter, logic) there are some more but those are the ones i use the most. Logic may use everything I'm not sure though.

Lol its not a niche product many people need these machines. Also if you go price a similarly specced workstation from hp or Dell you'll see that apple often ends up slightly cheaper or is right around the same price. My hp workstation at work was 7k and a similarly specced apple, which actually had a few better specs was 2k cheaper.

After looking at the design of this Mac Pro and how friggin' clean it is inside, I can almost understand why it costs so much...almost.

CoooL pic; It reminded me of unboxing for my MP 2009 a year back. I may get rid of my MP 2009 to get the new 2010,

I agree. It's a decent card. But I think they should have included a 5870 standard, and a 5970 option. Also, maybe an Nvidia Quadro FX 4800/5800 option. Well, since Apple seem to be moving to ATI for their desktop GPU options, maybe an ATI Fire Pro V8800. Because if you are paying $5000 for a machine like this, a 5870 is good, even for professional work, but not GREAT. And be serious, you aren't going to be buying a 12 core machine JUST for gaming. Or are you? :0

And why not? Crysis 2 is just around the corner! :D

For such a machine, get more RAM and buy at least one aftermarket SSD drive, something like the Intel X25-M G2 160GB

What I like with the Mac Pro is that the hard drives have their own drawers and that everything can be popped in and out without having to fiddle with tons of screws and detaching ribbon cables all the time!

Oh and I also like that it has like... 12 cores.

Love the industrial design of the Mac Pro, shame I don't have the money or computing requirements to necessitate one!

If you had the money why would you let a little thing like 'unnecessary computing requirements' stand in your way of getting one of these? :)

Games don't take advantage of multi-core machines. At least four of those cores would be busy doing... nothing. And then you only have an average graphics card in that machine. And then you would still have an operating system on the Mac for which still nobody except Valve writes games.

And when you're not using this rig to play games, the valid question is there what you need it for. Photoshop? Final Cut? Logic Studio? There isn't anything else in Mac land that could even remotely take advantage of that CPU power. And it certainly doesn't "make Safari snappier".

To really unleash the potential of that machine, the first thing you need to do is install a different operating system.

But at least you can say that you have a noisy workstation that did cost a lot. Guess why at the end of the day I decided to sell my Mac Pro and went with a 27" iMac instead - it's a MUCH better deal.
