Fresh bars, grips, brake levers and cables / housing. Kind of a slow mo project on the spare in my rare free time, just need another coat of shellac on the grips. Rivendell's Miesha's Portuguese tree cork grips, Dia Compe inverse levers, VO metal braid cables and their 'Left Bank' bars. Still have a couple pieces coming to doll up the rest of the bike with but the cockpit's more or less done.

Was looking for the cheapest half decent looking bike around - best £250 (got it half price - was a customer return) I've spent in my life. A year old now & still clocking the miles as if it was new. The 24 speed budget Shimano set is an absolute joy to use. The frame & forks are solid, lightweight & haven't put a foot wrong. I did however have to change the brakes because there was no way on earth the supplied set would stop you in any quick time at 30mph+; and some complain about the long reach on these Viking bikes but me being a lanky **** means it works very well for me.

Just picked up a new single speed bike! Swapped out the original rims with orange ones, added bullhorn handle bars, and a rear break. All for just $414!

Love this thing!

EDIT: I have no idea why the preview of the image is upside down, but the actual image is not.

My "Base model" Trek 1.1 :)

Started cycling last summer, can't get enough of it now. Did a few mild upgrades because I like tinkering with it, but I still realize it's a base model. (Michelin Pro4 tires, Topeak stem iPhone mount, comfy seat with the cutout for male parts)

Honestly, still not convinced that spending thousands of dollars on a bike will make me any better of a rider though. Having my aluminum bike perfectly fitted, and getting my legs strong seems to be working better than any part upgrades so far!

At what point does a carbon bike with ultralight components actually start to make a difference?

When you're racing criteriums and road races, and every second counts.

Or just like having nice things,

A $700-1500 bike gets you 90% of the road bike benefit of a $10,000 superbike. All the extra only gets you incrementally there.

It rides smoother and more domfortable, but Im no faster on my $6000 bike than I am on my $700 bike, but it sure looks bling bling.

That's what I thought, thanks for the input. For now I'll just stick to riding 4-5 times a week, then when I land my first "real" job, splurge on some carbon fiber goodness for little to no reason :D
