Here's a clue for the MobileMe team:

http://explore.live.com/windows-live-mesh?os=other&wa=wsignin1.0

Windows Live Mesh.

I use MS word out of convenience, I think that's why most people use it.

I write documents and often need to access them from other computers, this is easy if I remember to place those documents into iDisk. Then I've got them anywhere, decent feature if you remember to sync every new Doc.

Windows Live Mesh gives me 5GB of cloud space to replicate my entire Documents folder online. Even if I forget to sync it doesn't matter because Windows Live Mesh keeps my entire Documents folder sync'd online. I am never without a document, even if it's one from a while ago that I didn't intent to use but remembered as it was relevant to the situation.

Here's what I want from MobileMe:

When I first save a Document I want MobileMe to ask me whether or not I want that Document sync'd to MobileMe. Every time that Document is modified from there on out I want it sync'd with the MobileMe version so that it is always available to me.

Like Windows Live Mesh I would like Apple to provide at least 5GB of cloud space for 'whatever I want.' If I want that cloud space syncing my documents folder, so be it. If someone has a folder with 5GB of pictures they want on permanent then so be it. Hell, it could be a folder with 5GB of anything as long as it reliable syncs and would be available anywhere.

I would like MobileMe to provide seamless integration between my iMac, my MacBook Pro, and my iPhone. Anything changed in the Sync folder will be immediately updated on the devices I am not using at the time.

The key being 'seamless.'

Heard of Dropbox?

What am I missing here? I already use iDisk exactly like this.

It can't be set to automatically update certain folders across all computers on the account. Or even one as far as I know. It's not the same. It could be a lot better if some serious thought was put into it. Cloud services have unimaginable promise.

Dropbox is 2GB without paying for another service.

Apple should at least be competing with microsoft on this one. Windows Live Mesh is free for 5GB.

My free dropbox is now at 6.8GB just through sharing on Facebook, Twitter and having many friends install it.

If you did, following my link, then we would each get more space :)

In other words, you want DropBox. Since, you know, it provides exactly what you describe AND doesn't require an iOS or Mac OS device to work. $99/year is $99/year too much.

Anyway, I wonder if Steve also said "I REINVENTED THE PHONE! So why don't you sit the ***** down before I reinvent your FACE??"

No, not Dropbox. I already pay for MobileMe. I want it integrated into MobileMe so that it can update information as it's changed automatically.

Of course it can. It can sync any folder on your iDisk. In the situation that I was responding to, all they had to do was save files to their iDisk's "Documents" folder instead of the one in their user folder.

This.

In my situation, I replaced the Documents folder on the Dock with an alias linked to my iDisk's Documents folder. I just drag everything in there and it syncs straight to MobileMe, and therefore my iPad and iPhone, too. Too easy.

I'll try that.

Live Mesh is way better than Dropbox. it is more flexible. You can sync any file in any folder in the computer. You don't need a special folder just for Dropbox. I just synced my 150-Gb music folder with my laptop. If I want to keep some files online, I get 5Gb.

MobileMe has improved somewhat, but it still has plenty of room to improve. iDisk is often painful to use. Also MobileMe is a stupid name. It hasn't grown on me. I'm glad I got my first Mac in March 08 and had a free trial of .Mac. I was able to revive that account on MobileMe and use my @mac.com address. But for the first few months I didn't realize I could do that, and I was embarrassed every time someone asked for my email address. They would always ask twice, questioning the goofy name I just told them.

What was that? At...

AT ME DOT COM! Can we just move on now?

I wish Apple would let me use my business email address on their servers.

As for the story about Job's reactions, it isn't exactly surprising. Should make for some juicy reading once it hits the web. I'll Instapaper this for later.

Agree - I still use my .mac address and I miss .mac - it really (really!) was unfortunate when Apple deleted the .mac websites (pre iweb) - there were years of photos of the kids by month and then ... gone. Still annoyed Apple.

Ah, the inevitable "you shouldn't complain, because there are people who are worse off than you" line.

Do you also tell people who are seriously ill to stop complaining because there are people who are even more seriously ill?
Actually, that's a common "comfort" given in hospitals every day.
Jobs has always been so arrogant that in my opinion he has stunted the growth in Apples user base. The are so many people who won't touch Apple products for that reason. Showing that he mistreats his employees this way doesn't help Apples reputation. I'll be glad when he is gone from Apple.
ROFL, every CEO of major corporations is an arrogant *******. It's right in the job description, look it up. I guess you should only buy products from companies under $100m revenue. That leaves you out of the electronics industry, btw.

If you still have your account (MobileMe now), the photos are still on your iDisk.

I wouldn't put it like that though lol.

There is a huge line of people waiting to get a job at Apple - that alone should speak volumes about the culture that Apple has which people want to be part of - a winning innovative team that would be a great addition to ones resume in the long term.

Jobs has always been so arrogant that in my opinion he has stunted the growth in Apples user base. The are so many people who won't touch Apple products for that reason. Showing that he mistreats his employees this way doesn't help Apples reputation. I'll be glad when he is gone from Apple.

What a load of crap - people don't buy Apple computers because of their superiority complex believing the rubbish that 'real men own PC's' - that if you own an Apple it makes you a knuckle dragging mouth breathing click and drooler. Believe me, I've hung out on Neowin and look through the Windows side of the forum and the crap that is spewed by people who use their computer as justification of their geek credibility - it is a pathetic joke but something that actually has currency in the online forum world. Sorry but the mythical arrogance of Steve Jobs and Mac users is just that, an urban myth created by a small online community of PC tweakers scared that their past time will be taken away from them in much the same way that you see rednecks sleep with their gun believing Obama is going to jump through their window and take their guns off them.

Out in the real world, however, I see Joe and Jane sixpack purchasing them because they're compact (iMac) and easy to use - those who don't go to the Mac world (such as a family friend) mostly do so out of ignorance. The family friend in question went to a PC because she wanted Microsoft Office compatibility but she didn't know that Microsoft Office came on Mac OS X. I showed her it and how all her documents opened, her reaction, "wow, I didn't know that - why didn't the sales person at the shop tell me about that".

Are there scenarios where PC's are better suited for some work flow? sure, my brother is an engineer and the software he has is very specialised and only available on Windows but to say there is a massive chasm of functionality loss when going from Windows to Mac is just old wives tales.

You know, despite his micromanaging and obvious managerial style that contradicts most people's quo, it does work.

The subsequent rise of Apple in recent years is proof enough.

I don't understand why people want an extra app when it could be integrated.
Dropbox is integrated better than iDisk ever was and it works SEEMLESSLY across many different platforms. It is currently the gold standard for syncing data across your devices. iCloud or whatever they call it will have to equal it in speed, reliability and ease of use all for free for it to take off. Dropbox IS exactly what iDisk was supposed to be, but iDisk never got there and cost much more without many of the benefits Dropbox offers.

Exactly. I dumped .Mac for Dropbox and Gmail. Both work better that MobileMe ever did, and both are free.
