For those that don't know, AT&T and T-Mobile have been partners for the longest time. Anywhere where AT&T doesn't have coverage, they used T-Mobile towers.......and the same goes for T-Mobile. It's called "piggyback" networking. Nothing new. All AT&T is doing now is acquiring T-Mobile to cut down on the costs it pays to T-Mobile for the people using the T-Mobile towers, as well as vastly improving their infrastructure and their 4G. Acquiring an already healthy 4G system instead of building it from scratch is the quickest and most cost effective way to go about it. This is a plus for AT&T customers as their 4G and 3G will greatly improve. It's a big benefit to T-Mobile customers because they can now get the iPhone and a vastly larger network.

All in all, smart move on AT&T's part (and hopefully those AWFUL T-Mobile commercials will go away)

Your funny. Delusional but funny. BTW I am not an ATT fanboy. Don't have them for TV, Internet or home phone. But I do love reading Verizon fanboy posts that suggest that Verizon service is anything but an antiquated joke. But keep posting. You make me laugh.

You know, I hate the carrier fanboys as much as anyone else, but I still don't understand this mindset.

Use whatever works for you. For me (especially here in NYC) that happens to be Verizon. AT&T works better for you? Great! Keep it to yourself.

How does not scream higher prices for all?
Who can think this is possibly good? AT&T will now have the only GSM spectrum (basically) and can raise the prices, lower the caps, and constrict users even more.

Bingo! No doubt about it. Less competition means higher prices.

Wow, is T-Mobile just getting rid of everything outside of Germany and Austria?

What happened, is that Orange, and T-Mobile agreed to merge, but basically all that happened, is that anyone on Orange or T-Mobile, can use each others Cell Towers, if one is stronger than the other.

Verizon and Sprint already do this. If you have a Sprint post-paid phone you have service anywhere Sprint and/or Verizon has a tower within reach. Their pre-paid phones through Boost or Virgin do not roam onto Verizon's towers.

Sprint really has one of the best values for what you get in the industry, they just lack in customer service (improving big time though) and their phone selection isn't the best. I also believe they made a mistake with Wimax but it looks like Sprint is about to start rolling out LTE.

The Verizon fans I know - it's all about voice calls over data/texting. I understand that their voice service is superior with fewer dropped voice calls.

wow... so now its down to 3.

And if there are 3 nationwide networks - what is wrong with that? right now the US mobile market is too fragmented. What you need are maybe 3-4 nationwide carriers, any more than that you don't get economies of scale thus reduced costs and any less than that and you'll have a lack of competition to keep each other honest.

Anyone who roots for any cell provider pwns themselves.

Indeed. One thing to prefer one over the other based on what they offer you, but yeah why would there be fanboys of cell phone companies?

These posts arguing which is better are hilarious. Everyone will have different experiences and each provider will be better in different areas. At my house, I barely get Verizon coverage but I have very good AT&T coverage. In NYC people complain about AT&T all the time, but when I commute for work I never have a problem in Midtown. The only thing is that data speeds are slow as hell, but I never drop a call ever. I am hoping this ends up being good for the consumer. And until I feel like Verizon is a better value (which I currently do not), I'll be sticking with AT&T. Unless you've had bad customer service experiences with one, I don't see why you'd judge them on anything but overall value or service in your area. And then why hate on the other one unless they've been rude to you?

Oh wow a Verizon fanboy! When this merger is completed AT&T will be the biggest company. Oh wait. Aren't you going do the "duh at least with Verizon I can make a call" crap?. How sickening.

Don't hold your breath waiting for that Verizon Sprint merger. Not likely to happen.

Why not? Sprint has already released a statement in opposition to this merger and they will fight hard to stop it. That is their first course of action. If they can't stop it then they are going to be looking for a way to add value for their shareholders. How do you expect Sprint to compete as a nationwide carrier against AT&T and Verizon? Answer: They have to find a way to get bigger or sell out.

Hey it's not my fault.all I did was post who's going to rule the air now and they crawled out of the woodwork. Sorry man not my fault.

In metro Atlanta there are still areas where no signal is available from one street to another. Engineers don't always know how to determine where those cell towers should be placed to provide maximum coverage.

Actually, the engineers generally know where to place the towers. However, zoning laws and other factors may not allow telecoms to place towers in optimal locations.

T-mobile wanted out. Sprint will have to be dragged. Not impssible but not likely.

I didn't realize Qwest was Ma Bell before. Ugh (I have them). There is no escaping!

EVERYTHING in the U.S. was Ma Bell at one time. Like a zombie that was cut to pieces, the bits are coming back together. Like you said, "there is no escaping."

AT&T gets more room, reach of space, and other T-Mobile products

Which of course means that rather than thus raising data caps and/or prices, we will see AT&T argue that b/c they bought T-Mobile, their caps need to be lowered b/c of the T-Mobile users using the new AT&T network AND prices must increase for whatever-BS-reason AT&T comes up with

At the present time your right about Sprint needing to be dragged into a merger, but give it some time. I am talking about what the wireless industry looks like post AT&T-Tmobile merger. Sprint may very well be looking to merge if they can't find a way to expand their market against the big 2.
