Doesn't Sprint have to approve of the deal? Sprint could tell Verizon to go pound sand.

I don't think Sprint is hurting nearly as much as T-Mobile is right now.

Sprint was saved by the Android powered HTC EVO 4G

I see them everywhere in this university town. It's very interesting to see so many students switch from iPhones to EVO's en mass.

What will happen to all those users of the Google Nexus One and Nexus S cellphones?

nothing really.

Does anyone know how this will improve AT&Ts coverage and network?

I would imagine that because the voice service is on the same spectrum as the existing ATT network, this will just really fill out any holes in each network's coverage, as they overlap....

There will be concessions made to make the feds happy. I don't have as much of a worry about prices as other people do because the concessions could even include providing cheap access for MVNOs or, even better, opening of spectrum and tower sites for a new GSM provider.

If the FCC or FTC allows this merger, however will not allow a Verizon-Sprint merger then it looks like they are playing favorites. My guess is that Verizon will wait on the outcome of this merger and if it is approved they will make an offer for Sprint. Once the precedence has been set it will be hard for them to backtrack.

I don't think that would be playing favorites. It would be more like a "you snooze, you lose" sort of thing. Going from 4->3 major networks might not ring many bells for the FCC, but 3->2 probably would. If Verizon really wanted to take over Sprint, the FCC would probably just tell them that they should have acted before AT&T.

AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said one of the goals of the acquisition would be to move T-Mobile customers to smart phones, which have higher monthly fees. AT&T "will look hard" at keeping T-Mobile's no-contract plans, he said.

F•ck. You.
If T-Mobile wasn't able to stay in business offering the rate plans that it has been, what sense does it make for the company buying them to continue to offer them?!

Thank you so much for telling the truth. Hurts Verizon fanboys doesn't it?

What hurts, that I get perfect call quality every were? yup that hurts. In reality it works both ways i couldn't have switched to At&t because i get a better discount on Verizon. You can call the network inferrer, i call it reliable especially in my area.

Nothing.

It's not like AT&T would shut down T-Mobile USA's network in the next ten years.

Assuming the deal is approved, at some point T-Mobile subscribers who upgrade their handsets will actually receive AT&T hardware that roams on T-Mobile's AWS band if AT&T's network is unavailable.

Eventually, there will be so few legacy devices accessing the AWS band, that they would be able to shut it down, just as Sprint is ready to pull the plug on Nextel's iDEN network starting in 2013, eight years after their acquisition of Nextel.

It's Win-Win for both companies. The germans get rid of the business in the US which was loosing more money rather than making it (they actually paid 51 billion 11 years ago and now they are selling it for much less) and AT&T has
one competitor less.

Loosers will be the laid off workers and maybe the customers. I still find it amazing what the US customers pay for mobile phones. I've been visiting for almost 3 months now and so far I have payed more than I usually do in a year in Austria for the same amount of minutes/sms/web. And the coverage sucks btw (at&t and t-mobile)

Sprint will be hurting plenty if this deal is approved. They (and Verizon to a lessor extent) just won't have the size to compete with AT&T who will own a huge majority of the market.

If they approve this deal then I would totally support a Verizon-Sprint tie up because the only way to keep AT&T in check will be another company with as much size and power in the market.

Just wait and see how much you love AT&T when they own so much of the market they run the pricing and make everyone follow them.

Why would everyone follow the largest network? The only shot at competing with AT&T is providing a service that is cheaper/more affordable. It might force Verizon to actually lower costs rather than raise them. Verizon lowering its rates would force AT&T to lower its rates to attract customers away from Verizon. There will be a price war, but I don't think it will be a horrific price war.

I still think (Apple) could unlock a lot of potential from integrating GSM radios in all their products and then owning the wireless system that links them together.

Being from outside the USA, I'd hope any Apple move wouldn't be for US only.

However, Apple enabling any un-activated wifi cards and Using airport extremes as an "open Apple network", such that iPhones and other Mac products automatically use wifi wherever possible - complete with VoIP integration - would be kind of cool.

That and becoming an MVNO in every country.

Nothing.

Just like when Cingular bought AT&T Wireless and shut down the TDMA network.

Oh wow a Verizon fanboy! When this merger is completed AT&T will be the biggest company. Oh wait. Aren't you going do the "duh at least with Verizon I can make a call" crap?. How sickening.

Lol..your an ATT fanboy. And the verizon fans arent going to use the phone call reliance excuse because everybody knows that AND Verizon will buy Sprint and re-gain the top spot. GG, served, bitch-slapped, cornered, pwned!

Well, since we're trading anecdotal tales, I'm going to point out that I've never seen a single EVO in the wild. (I also live in a university town.)

Anyone who roots for any cell provider pwns themselves.

lol, that's funny, I know a handful of Evo 4G college students, but almost everyone in my physics class has an iPhone. All but myself and 2 other people I can think of. :D

Post merger the wireless landscape would be...

AT&T - 130+ million customers
Verizon - 90+ million customers
Sprint-Nextel - 50+ million customers

I don't really see how Verizon or Sprint can compete on their own against a mega carrier like AT&T. If Verizon and Sprint merge then you are left with 2 carriers that are pretty evenly matched as far as size goes. It would surprise me if they don't attempt the merger in order to compete in the next year or two if this one is approved.

AT&T wants the customers, and especially, they want all their iPhones back...

T-Mobile is awesome, it's the best! Love them!

Hate AT&T - had a horrible experience with them.... down with AT&T!

Oh, wait...

Your funny. Delusional but funny. BTW I am not an ATT fanboy. Don't have them for TV, Internet or home phone. But I do love reading Verizon fanboy posts that suggest that Verizon service is anything but an antiquated joke. But keep posting. You make me laugh.

But the issue is exactly that. The FCC will not allow there to be 2 major carriers. In the hopes of trying to prevent a monopoly-like situation, they would rather pump millions of dollars into either/both Verizon and Sprint to maintain competition in the market.
