Hi guys, can anybody tell me if i should trim off the edges of the module, or should I just send it back to OWC and request for a new one?

Please take a look at the pictures here

Wow, that's really not cool. I'd contact OWC immediately and send someone these pics. Unless I'm missing something, that's terrible quality control.

I'd send it back. Don't trim the edges, since that will make it non-returnable and you risk doing damage. It's supposed to fit. Have them send you another one that does.

For the money you paid for that, I'd definitely send that back. It looks like there was a defect in the PCB cut/dimensions.

send it back man! it's better to pay for the shipping cost than to have a useless blunt blade.

Personally, I'd just have a go trimming it a bit, doesn't look too difficult and you only need about a millimetre or two of clearance. That said, where I live sending products bought internationally back is a no go, and warranty rarely means anything. If it's not a hassle with regards to time/expense then definitely have OWC sort it out. Surely they should cover the shipping?

EDIT: Small Fry, Large Fry, Side Salad? When did this happen?

EDIT 2: Have you thought of using a bit of sandpaper to carefully grind down that edge? I don't see what could go wrong with that.

+1 for sandpaper, do not cut it with scissor.

yeah, i'm thinking of using sandpaper...

But i'm still waiting for OWC to reply my email...

i know how u feel brother, it's like you are on tandas umum (public toilet) but you just can't take a **** yet because the doors are all locked! :D

it's like an april fool joke from OWC, all the way from US to the east! haha :D

hope OWC will resolve it soon. i knew they have a great customer service because i have bought a 8GB rams for my MBP and my credit card was having an issue and they informed me so quick and we resolved it well.

lol..

Based upon where you are and the potential return/replacement shipping time, I would alert the company and get their ok to try trimming.

Then if triming damages the unit then they will replace.

Owc

Wow sounds like they're really on the ball with email and chat too. :/

I usually browse OWC stuff before making any purchases and when I do use them I find the communication one of the best out there - speak as you find!

Recently had a failed external HD box (my fault) out of warranty.

They (OWC) came up with a superb upgrade deal and confirmed all the details with me via. telephone (at their cost). I'm in the UK!

Just to balance the thread out a bit ;-)

UPDATE

They have contacted me

Thanks to everyone here who gave their opinions
:)

Sorry to revive this thread. I recently bought a mercury aura pro for my 2012 air, and guess wwhat!? It didn't fit. Btw im from indonesia, and sending it back is not an option, it's so expensive, the tax is $90 and the shipping fee is $50.

I decided to sandpaper it and it works :D

sorry to revive this thread again. this was my chat session with a CS from OWC:

OWC Rebecca: [9:53:33 PM] Hello Adi Chandra Hid.., thanks for contacting OWC Customer Service. This is OWC Rebecca. How may I assist you?
Adi Chandra Hid..: [9:53:33 PM] when is envoy for 2012 11" air is going to be available?
OWC Rebecca: [9:53:58 PM] I am not sure if I have an eta on that. Let me check
Adi Chandra Hid..: [9:54:38 PM] ok
[9:55:23 PM] btw i have a complaint for owc about the build quality of mercury aura flash storage for 2012 air
OWC Rebecca: [9:55:42 PM] I am sorry but I do not have any eta on an enclosure for that drive
Adi Chandra Hid..: [9:56:16 PM] i live in indonesia, and it's like the other side of the earth from US
[9:56:30 PM] and i recently bought a mercury aura 240gb for my 2012 air
OWC Rebecca: [9:56:50 PM] Okay
Adi Chandra Hid..: [9:57:13 PM] the shipping is expensive, it was about $50 and the tax i had to pay for the government here was about $110
[9:57:29 PM] so the total cost was about $460
[9:57:57 PM] when i received the aura pro, it didn't fit on my air
[9:58:28 PM] so shipping it back to owc is not an option because i had to waste more dollars
OWC Rebecca: [9:58:48 PM] You are certain you have the air model 5,1 or 5,2?
Adi Chandra Hid..: [9:59:09 PM] the 2012, i don't know the certain type. it's the new one, custom order with 8GB of ram
OWC Rebecca: [9:59:37 PM] Apple continues to sell the leftover models at the same time. Are you sure?
[9:59:40 PM] What is the serial number?
Adi Chandra Hid..: [9:59:50 PM] hold a sec
[10:00:17 PM] it's a 5,1 with serial number C02HW0VCDRV9
OWC Rebecca: [10:00:30 PM] Okay just checking.
[10:00:37 PM] Have you spoken with techs?
[10:00:47 PM] That drive is only for the 2012 model so it should fit
Adi Chandra Hid..: [10:01:09 PM] no because it's going to be useless. i bought the exact model, the right model for my air
[10:01:19 PM] it was just the build quality of the aura is not good
OWC Rebecca: [10:01:38 PM] We have not had any other complaints from other customers that the drive does not fit.
Adi Chandra Hid..: [10:01:39 PM] i had to buy a sand paper and shaved the pcb board by 1mm
[10:01:52 PM] well not exact 1mm, i think it was less than that
OWC Rebecca: [10:01:58 PM] That has voided the warranty.
Adi Chandra Hid..: [10:02:03 PM] maybe about 0.3mm
[10:02:24 PM] yes that voided the warranty, but it fit now and works just fine
[10:02:30 PM] i had to take a risk u know.
[10:02:49 PM] because shipping it back and paying another government tax is very expensive
OWC Rebecca: [10:03:05 PM] But you never consulted with techs to make sure you were installing correctly?
Adi Chandra Hid..: [10:03:30 PM] what i really want to complaint is, pleasee owc, if u want to send an item to a very distant place like indonesia (south east asia)
[10:03:44 PM] please make sure the item is tested, well fitted
OWC Rebecca: [10:04:06 PM] We do test them. I am sorry but this is the first time I have heard of one not fitting
Adi Chandra Hid..: [10:04:28 PM] well the item works well, but it was just didn't fit because of the pcb cutting is not as precise
[10:05:06 PM] im glad the item works really well, and the speed is much higher than the toshiba flash storage in my 2012 air
[10:05:48 PM] please make sure to double check your item before shipping it to a very far place. i know you were testing it, but i didn't think you were testing it by putting it in the macbook air
[10:06:10 PM] you must be using a converter like envoy to test it because opening air, fitting it, testing it will take much time
OWC Rebecca: [10:06:12 PM] That is how we test it. There is no other way
[10:06:36 PM] We test our SSDs in mac models.
Adi Chandra Hid..: [10:06:46 PM] u tested it by putting it into the macbook air unit?
OWC Rebecca: [10:07:20 PM] Yes. That is the only way we can test. We don't even make an enclosure for that model drive yet.
[10:07:33 PM] Even on the older auras we still test in an air.
Adi Chandra Hid..: [10:07:53 PM] well then, it might be your air unit is getting loose, or my aura pro grows a little bit when flying from USA to asia
[10:08:30 PM] ok then, I'm just glad the unit works really well after i shaved off a bit of the pcb board.
[10:08:38 PM] that's all i have to complaint
[10:08:58 PM] do you want me to give u a thread discussing about the aura doesn't fit?
[10:09:04 PM] that one came from malaysia
OWC Rebecca: [10:09:17 PM] I will forward this on but this is the first time I heard of the 2012 not fitting.
Adi Chandra Hid..: [10:10:13 PM] https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=12298906#poststop
[10:10:22 PM] that one was the 2011 version i think.
OWC Rebecca: [10:10:49 PM] That thread is dated 2010?
[10:11:03 PM] Sorry 2011
[10:11:16 PM] That is a 2011 model then not a 2012
Adi Chandra Hid..: [10:11:28 PM] yes that one was 2011 model, and mine was 2012
[10:11:42 PM] so u ever heard about the 2011 model that doesn't fit?
[10:11:55 PM] so mine is the first 2012 model that doesn't fit?
[10:12:38 PM] i love OWC u know, i really do because their products are great, and u can't find any third party that sell an alternative flash storage besides apple
[10:13:25 PM] but please, forward this issue, because i almost wasted another hundred bucks just to get the thing working
OWC Rebecca: [10:13:26 PM] That I have heard. We did have a few customers complain that the 2011 did not fit but some were installing wrong and others came back and fit our airs fine. I am not sure what happened with those. Overall we rarely have this complaint for the air drives as a whole.
Adi Chandra Hid..: [10:14:44 PM] i didn't do it wrong, i have pushed the aura to the max, and it's still didn't fit. the pcb board is not cut really well in the factory. by 0.2-0.3mm
OWC Rebecca: [10:15:18 PM] Had there been a batch that was cut wrong I would have heard about it and we would have notified customers to send them back.
[10:15:22 PM] This never happened.
Adi Chandra Hid..: [10:16:04 PM] last year i bought the memory and mercury 6G for my macbook pro, those items are working great until now. and recently the aura which had the issue, this scares me to buy another product from OWC again
[10:16:23 PM] ok that never happened, but it happened with my aura
[10:17:25 PM] i just need u to inform your boss, there is a single 2012 aura that the pcb board is not cut well, it didn't fit in some guy's 2012 air in indonesia
[10:17:28 PM] that's all
OWC Rebecca: [10:17:34 PM] I have.
Adi Chandra Hid..: [10:18:05 PM] i'm not asking for a new item, no im not, and i couldn't care less about the voided warranty because i believe the owc product is good
[10:18:18 PM] ok thanks rebecca, have a great day :)
OWC Rebecca: [10:19:00 PM] Thank you for using OWC livechat. You too!
