This is going to be amazing.

Now I have to find the remote, press a button to change the channel or make the volume louder.

In the future, I might be able to find the remote, press a button to call up Siri and then shout, "Siri, change to channel 1" or "Siri increase volume"

Wow, the future is going to be so awesome.

Xbox already does this all with Kinect, its works very well. Microsoft do a great job with the Xbox.

are you serious? i guess i don't see the novelty. i usually just touch the on button on the TV every time I want to turn it on. i'm actually annoyed that the ATV2 doesn't have this feature and that I HAVE to find the remote to turn it on.

I'm serious, I just don't see why this would be a good option. Not only will it add to the cost of the TV while providing minimal additional function, but the initial implementations will be horrible (think original VCRs with wired remotes).

Why do people keep thinking this?

Obviously they're gonna add a trigger where the TV volume will go mute when Siri is on.

I say more likely the tv knows what is coming out of it's speakers and subtracts that from the input, noise canceling style. no problem

Apple did Siri.

So it's now "safe" for everyone else to do.

Well put.

I don't want to have to talk to my f#$!ing TV!

The user interface of Comcast and all cable as it is now is atrocious, but talking to it won't fix that!!

I've grown very accustom to the internet's intuitiveness... clearly something adressed in a future Apple TV. But the thing i like best is its remarkable ability to make me feel like I'm socializing or learning or merely being entertained for years on end without ever saying a word.

The next leap forward to remove all stupid unnecessary face-to-face (talking) interaction - build Taco Bell machine.

SNL and Stephen Colbert are gonna have tons of fun giving pesky siri commands during their shows

Kinect calibrates itself for background and television noise , I imagine Apples copy will do the same thing.

There is something much more important than voice recognition for a TV set.

After image quality, the most important feature of a TV set for many people is the Full Picture-in-Picture (Full PiP), which requires at least two Digital Terrestrial Television (DTTV or DTT) tuners inside the TV set. Which manufacturers/models deliver that?

Do people even use pip, I havnt seen a TV set being used like that for years

Pro tip:

Go to bed like everyone else?

Going to bed "on time" is for idiots. (@4:30am)

Proer tip: use the retro remote control...it's gotta be somewhere.

SIRI!! WHERE'S THE REMOTE!?!?

hahahah picture in picture? I forgot about that.
News is picture in picture + words + scrolling worlds + graphics +video all at once.

But it's such a waste - fragmenting a 70" image.
I'm American, when we want to watch two things at once, we buy another TV.
Picture-out-picture.

And if it flickers occasionally, we throw it in the trash and shovel our faces with red meat, custard, and diet soda.

Microsoft is NOT "already there" with a Siri like voice interface. Yes, they expanded the XBox Kinect interface. No, it's nothing like Siri.

For example, in Netflix, with Kinect voice interface, I found that it is typical Microsoft. It starts working and I think, "This is kind of cool!" Then, it doesn't go far enough.

My next thought is "I'm doing it wrong". Then I realize: My tool is broke!

In Netflix voice will only get you so far. I could move to new screens of videos, but to select an individual video, I had to move my hands like a cursor. But wait! To move my hands like a cursor, I had to stand up! That violates the Prime Directive of the couch potato! The other option was to grab the remote which I could've done in the first place.

Looking forward to Apple getting it right! Microsoft should've waited and copied something good rather than giving us poor execution of a rumored capability.

This thread should be titled:

"Questionable rumors about an unannounced hypothetical Apple product might trigger breakthrough in TV-technology"

I find this s&%#@ amazing!

I think you'll have to press a button on the remote to active Siri. The mic should be on the remote too so you can just say the command quietly.

Relative to all this "Siri can't hear over the TV volume" nonsense, why not just program the system to ignore the audio stream for the television programming so that Siri can't hear it at all (like noise canceling headphones, but much better since the "noise" would be very specific and precise)? Then, Siri would just hear the sounds in the room that are NOT playing through the TV.

Exactly!

The thought of a voice controlled Motorola Comcast box sounds like a nightmare. I'm hoping the Cable/Satellite companies would let Apple's version be integrated if the customer chooses to, but I really doubt it.

Currently I can only get the digital subscription channels with a Comcast box. If I plug the connection into the TV, I can only get the first 30 channels. This is why I am really wondering how Apple is going to get around this. Unless they get networks signed up to their service, the customer is still going to be dependent on Cable and Satellite boxes.

In all seriousness, the iTV i would expect to have built in wifi (or the new bluetooth 4.0 for its lower power usage) so the iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch can be used as the remote rather than Siri (especially useful for those with speech impairment or those who want to watch tv late at night without waking the family)

So you'd have to push a button to use Siri? Why not just use a volume button?

When I'm alone, I don't want to talk to my units, I much prefer buttons, because it's faster than forming a sentence.

Also, that mockup image is horrible in so many ways.

i like the voice control on the kinect but in combination with the hand moves its far from perfect as it barely works sitting on ur couch. And if i get up each time to control sth i might as well just use the remote

will TViri be equipped with recognizing underaged children requesting porn?

Josh : "Siri, put some porn on"
TViri : "Josh, we 've talked about this last week"

You can use voice commands to start playing a film/open games just say the name of the title.
