Scenario 1:

If the iPhone 5 is due out in the fall, why are parts such as the home button and sim card tray circulating so early? No way would China have their hands on production ready parts a little under half a year before it's even announced. This is fake.

Scenario 2:

The iPhone 5 is due out at WWDC given the recent plethora of part leaks, but it may not be as radical of a redesign as we initially though. Furthermore, just because this is a flat sim tray, doesn't mean that it's not a bigger screen or thinner, ect.

The metal frame of the 4S with the improved antennas was leaked before the Verizon iPhone 4 was released. Back then it was thought it was an early design, but later one it was proved to be from the iPhone 4S. That was in January or February if I recall correctly.

The tray appears essentially identical to the SIM card tray found in the iPhone 4S and 4, and if the part is indeed legitimate it suggests that Apple may retain a similar flat-edged form factor for the forthcoming device.

I can see them holding onto the external antenna idea. It's the only way they can cram everything they do inside the current iPhone. if the next one is thinner, they'll still need a whole bunch of space in the middle for everything.

This is how it works:

6 months till release and it's as follows:

Month 1) Release sim tray "leaked design"
Month 2) Show a glimpse of the internal screen/camera/light sensor cable
Month 3) Leak some funky .plist code to reference a new CPU and also a new plastic molded phone case from china
Month 4) Report that some crap site like BGR says liquid metal will be the casing
Month 5) Show off some blurry image resembling the iPhone 4S but thinner design with blacked out screen that doesn't show resolution nor screen size so people can speculate yet again that it's larger than 3.5"...the source comes from a vietnamese forum.
Month 6) Show an empty shell without a circuit board but should drive people mad because it looks like an iPhone 4/4S but thinner and the screen is THE SAME SIZE.

Month 7) Profit (apple that is) because final design is unveiled and sold out hot cakes.

From the photo, can you tell if the screen is going to be 3.5" again? I am concerned that it will be iPhone 4SS. If I end up choosing the iPhone, perhaps I should just buy the 4S rather than wait until the possible October release month.

The 4s is the 5th iPhone. Why do people continue to think the 6th iPhone is the iPhone 5?
Because the 5th iPhone is the iPhone 4S?

So until we hear that the 6th iPhone is going to be named "iPhone 4T" or "the New iPhone" we will assume that it is going to be a new "number" and 5 comes after 4 last time I was in pre-school, so...

I already have an iPhone 5. On the box it says 'iPhone 4S' but it's definitely the fifth generation handset from Apple.

We're talking about the sixth-generation device which will definitely not be called the 'iPhone 5' by Apple.

That said, this "leaked parts" rumor sounds very suspicious.

It might. Apple always seems to release a revolutionary (1, 3G, 4) device then an evolutionary (3GS, 4S).

Following this, it would go 4, 4S, 6, 6S, 8, 8S if they went just by the number of models. They'd end up only going in even numbers, which would look weird. I think they shouldn't count the "S" models in there. The next iPhone should be called the iPhone 5, the 4S being model "4.5".

The iPhone 4 can be an exception because coming out with a "3" after "3G" and "3GS" would be weird.

You forgot the most important pre-release step.

Month 8: Leave prototype in Bar.

The new iPhone. To be simply called the iPhone. And it looks the same as the last 2 old iPhones.

Here we go... I'm thinking a slightly thinner iPhone 4 like design. Would they have to redesign the sim card try for that?

Personally I am against them going thinner. I think the iPhone is really as thin as it should get. Some Samsung phone I feel are really way to thin already.

I really believe Apple throws out false information and even pays to do it to throw people off. They have a history of doing it.

How about they just call it "iPhone." Complicated, isn't it? And considering Apple just did this for the iPad, I think people are silly to assume otherwise.

why is it so hard to believe that a redesigned phone can use the same sim tray as they iPhone 4/4S......

new phone doesn't mean there has to be a revolutionary new SIM tray....

Well based on speculation and such, we are expecting the next iPhone to have some sort of taper or curved edging which resembles the iPad design. If that's the case, then a flat sim card tray wouldn't sit flush with that design. But of course that design is also speculation on our part, so who knows whether my previous comment is correct or not.

No second Sim Card Tray?

I hope theres two of them because i surely won't buy a new phone if it doesn't finally finally support 2 sim cards. is it really hard to do this? geez....

there better be a redesign, i dont want the same phone for a 3rd time ^^ i already have the 4 and 4S

Agree with most of the comments here :)

Is there a way to just insert a SIM into a phone SD-card style that doesn't require a tray?

200 hour standby

I want an iPhone that has a 144 hour standby time like the old Nokia phones.

I know, I know keep dreaming....

Oh and still...

...I am waiting for a true update on the iPhone. The iPhone 4S didn't really convince me - despite the fact that in October, I am eligible for an early upgrade

And we don't believe this is merely a iPhone 4/4S tray why?

Perhaps if the writers for MacRumors stopped merely aggregating rumours and actually started investigating them then this would have been answered already. Who the hell would post an article claiming this part was "essentially identical" without thinking "Hey, maybe the readers might want to know how it's different."

Im going to be p/o if the iPhone 5 is not a completely different design

whats so bad with the design of the iphone4? I like it - if you dont just buy an android as they have loads of different designs to choose from...;)
